Coward leads Huskies past Tigers 87-62

The undefeated Saint Mary's Huskies improve to 5-0 on the season with an 87-62 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers at the Dalplex on Wednesday night.

The Tigers (3-4) slip under .500 and now sit fourth in the AUS heading into the holiday break.

The first quarter was tight with both teams trading buckets and trading leads. Korenda Colley hit a three with 49 seconds remaining and the score was tied at 21 after ten minutes.

The Huskies came out of the gate strong in the second quarter with a 12-4 run, capped off by a three by Rachelle Coward, who had a game-high 21 points for the Huskies. Courtney Thompson hit two free throws in the dying seconds of the quarter to narrow the gap to four, and the Tigers trailed 35-39 at half.

The Huskies opened the third quarter with another run, this time an 11-4 tear that spread the lead to 54-41.

The Tigers couldn't handle the CIS No. 1 ranked Huskies in the fourth quarter, and Saint Mary's went on to win 87-62 after outscoring the Tigers 25-14 in the final frame.

Courtney Thompson led the way for the Tigers, adding 13 points and 4 rebounds in the loss. Rebecca Nuttall had nine points and grabbed eight boards.

Justine Colley is now 20 points away from being the all-time leading scorer in AUS history after registering 15 points on the night.

Both teams now head into the holiday break, looking to finish their seasons out strong in 2014.
