Women's track & field team claim 25th consecutive championship

(MONCTON, N.B.) – The 2014 Subway AUS track and field championships wrapped up today on the Université de Moncton campus. The StFX X-Men claimed their first ever track and field championship banner, dethroning the Dalhousie Tigers, whose men's team has taken home the banner the last 12 consecutive seasons.

The X-Men finished the event with 137 team points, 30 points ahead of the Tigers men's team who placed second. The UNB Varsity Reds men's team claimed third place with 78 points.

With 135 team points, the Dalhousie Tigers women's team claimed their 25th consecutive AUS championship banner. The X-Women placed second with 118 points and the Varsity Reds claimed third with 45.

The host Moncton Aigles Bleues team claimed fourth place with 30 points, while their men's team placed fifth with 23 points.

Human kinetics student and Kingston, Ont. native of the StFX X-Women, Abbi Finnan, claimed AUS women's rookie of the year honours. Dalhousie's Chas Smith, an engineering student from Warwick, Bermuda, took home AUS rookie of the year honours for the men.

Fourth-year Dalhousie high jumper Rebecca Haworth of Waverly, N.S. took home the women's student-athlete community service award. Haworth is the founder of the Special Tigers Sports Program, which gives children with developmental delays an opportunity to learn and play sports with varsity student-athletes from Dalhousie.

StFX's Thomas Faour, a first-year math and science student and sprinter from St. John's, N.L., took home the male student-athlete community service award. Faour is involved in the 2014 'Run for the Cure' campaign, a charity run in support of cancer research.

StFX swept the AUS men's and women's track athlete of the year awards with third-year human kinetics student and Antigonish, N.S. native Eilish MacQuarrie and third-year business student Bryden Tate from Heatherton, N.S. taking home the honours.

MacQuarrie was also awarded Subway Athlete of the Meet honours for her performance at this weekend's championship. She claimed gold in the women's 300m dash and silver in the women's 600m run.

Similarly, Tate's championship performance earned him Subway Athlete of the Meet honours. He claimed gold in the men's 1000m and 1500m runs this weekend and finished fourth in the men's 3000m run.

The Dalhousie Tigers swept the AUS men's and women's field athlete of the year awards. Haworth took home the honour for the women and second-year arts student and Dartmouth, N.S. native Jordan Bruce earned the honour for the men.

Head coach of the Dal Tigers women's team, Rich Lehman, earned AUS coach of the year honours. StFX head coach Bernie Chisholm took home AUS coach of the year honours for his season coaching the X-Men.
