John Cluett announced as the recipient of the David Fry Memorial Bursary
This past weekend, John was awarded the David Fry Memorial Bursary, established in memory of David Fry to recognize his significant contributions to amateur sport and to support swimmers who embody the values he championed.
The David Fry Memorial Bursary has been established to remember David, his contributions to competitive swimming in Nova Scotia, and to encourage swimmers toward excellence. David Fry left an invaluable legacy to amateur sport in Nova Scotia and in Canada, the legacy of his character; character built on commitment, intensity, discipline, effort, and desire.
This year's recipients of the David Fry Memorial Bursary is awarded to John Cluett from Dalhousie University.
John is an exceptional student-athlete who has shown remarkable dedication both in the classroom and in the pool. A graduate of Dartmouth High School, John was a six-time recipient of the Principal's List, nominated for the Lieutenant Governor's Medal, and earned the Swim Nova Scotia Academic Excellence Award in 2024. His academic achievements are matched by his passion for science - he volunteered as a lab technician and instructor, assisting in chemistry labs and mentoring younger students in hands-on learning.
Beyond his academic success, John is a highly accomplished swimmer and respected teammate. As a member of the Halifax Trojan Aquatic Club, he is a provincial record holder, a two-time club Top Male Swimmer, and a proud member of the Swim Nova Scotia NextGen Program. John exemplifies leadership through his work ethic, discipline, and willingness to mentor younger swimmers, helping them develop their skills and confidence.
This fall, John began studying Medical Sciences at Dalhousie University, where he will also compete for the Dalhousie Tigers Varsity Swim Team. His long-term goals include becoming a U SPORTS medalist and pursuing a career in medicine - aspirations that reflect both his drive for excellence and his commitment to helping others.
The David Fry Memorial Bursary will help support John's academic and athletic journey by easing the financial challenges of post-secondary education, allowing him to focus on training, competition, and his studies.
John embodies the values that defined David Fry - perseverance, dedication, and a deep love for the sport of swimming. His passion, leadership, and character make him a truly deserving recipient of this year's bursary.
Each year awards may be made from the Fund to promising, Nova Scotia swimmers to assist them to continue their training, education, and pursuit of their swimming goals as they pursue their University education.
