(FREDERICTON, NB) The first day of UNB's Amby Legere Invitational was dominated by swimmers from Dalhousie and Acadia.
The host UNB REDS did post a couple of solid podium finishes.
The Dal Tigers won 12 of the 18 first day events, while Acadia swimmers won the other seven.
Dal's Elaine Gentlemen won the women's 50 and 100 metre freestyle events, while her Tigers teammate Martine Nyhof won the women's 200-metre backstroke and 400-metre individual medley.
Acadia's Gordon Shortt won twice, in the men's 50-metre breaststroke and 400-metre individual medley, as did Dal's Noah Mascoll-Gomes, who finished first in the men's 100 and 200 metre freestyle events.
Acadia's Kassidy Hamilton, a Fredericton native, won the women's 100-metre butterfly, while her Acadia teammate Shane Kenny won the men's 100-metre butterfly.
"This is her hometown and she's come in working hard and being aggressive," said Kris Bell, the head coach of Acadia's swimming team. "It shows toughness, it shows resilience and it shows she's excited to be part of this, and competing with her peers."
UNB's best finish came from Ahmed Helal, who was second in the men's 50-metre breaststroke.
"It feels good, to be honest, because I was injured for the last meet and couldn't perform as well as I could this week," said Helal. "It's great to be able to get this result for the team and for myself."
The REDS' Alexie Sanford swam to a third place finish in the women's 100-metre freestyle.
After the first day of competition, Dal leads the women's, men's and team standings, with Acadia second in all three, UNB third and Mount Allison fourth.
The second meet of the 2021-22 Atlantic University Sport season concludes Sunday. Races get underway at 10:00am.
