Tigers close Interlock play with 3-0 win over Sherbrooke

By Kirk Jessome

(Halifax, NS) – In the final game of the first AUS-RESQ Interlock volleyball tournament, the Dalhousie Tigers squared off against l'Universite de Sherbrooke Vert et Or. The Tigers put on a dominant offensive performance through three sets and came away with the 3-0 win.

The Tigers came out hot to start the match, with Matthew Donovan (London, ON) picking up two quick kills and an ace as the Tigers jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead.

Sherbrooke was able to chip away at some of the lead before heading into the technical break at 16-9, but the hitting of Donovan and Kobe Shannon (Halifax, NS) was too much for the Vert et Or in the first set. Donovan delivered another one of his seven first-set kills as the Tigers took it 25-15.

The Tigers picked up their defence in the second set, with five of their first nine points coming from blocks involving Nicolas Faulkner (Truro, NS), Matthew Woods (Halifax, NS), and Graham Schmuland (Calgary, AB).

The Tigers strong defensive play, combined with kills from Woods gave them a solid 16-7 lead into the break.

Dalhousie continued to pick up kills and increase their lead over Sherbrooke as Donovan delivered back-to-back kills to close out the second set and give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Sherbrooke was led by Mathieu Ouellet (St-Georges-de-Beauce, QC) with six kills, while Donovan had 10 for the Tigers through the first two sets.

The Tigers made the most of early leads in set number three, with the combination of Shannon, Donovan and Woods pushing them to double-up on Sherbrooke at the break with a 16-8 lead.

Dalhousie continued a smothering offensive attack late in the set, including a big kill from first-year Justin Drapeau (Riverview, NB).

As with the other two sets, Donovan put the finishing touches on the third set with his game-high 13th kill, earning him Subway Player of the Game honours.

Olivier Inkel led the Vert et Or with six kills in the match, along with Ouellet's six.

The Tigers will be back November 11th hosting UNB at home. Sherbrooke will take on Laval at home on November 3rd
