Tigers Remain Undefeated after Third AUS Meet

The Dalhousie men's and women's swim teams remained undefeated winning their third consecutive AUS Invitational Swim meet at Dalplex this weekend. The women's team finished with 244 points, McGill came second with 228 points and Acadia placed third with 106. On the men's side of things Dalhousie put up 245.5 points, second-place McGilll had 193 points and Acadia finished third with139.5.

Day 1

After one day of swimming, McGill's women's swim team was in the lead with 118 points, the Tigers were in second with 111 points and Acadia rounded out the top three with 57 points.

The Tigers men's team found themselves at the top of the leaderboard after Day 1 with 114.5 points while McGill trailed with 97 points and Acadia was in third with 75.5.

Dalhousie and McGill each had nine swimmers qualify for the CIS championships hosted by the University of Victoria in the morning session.

The Tigers would cap off the impressive day with two more qualifying swims in the evening session, bringing the season total to fourteen. Day 1 event winners for the Tigers included:

Rachel Shin- 200m Butterfly

Paige Crowell- 50m Breaststroke

Tony Liew- 50m Breaststroke

Sean Berrigan- 100m Backstroke

Meagan Bernier- 400m Freestyle

Kyle Watson- 400m Freestyle

McGill had seven individual event winners on Saturday evening as well as placed first in the women's and men's 400m Medley Relays. Acadia had two event winners and Memorial had one.

Tony Liew had the most memorable swim of the day, topping a fourteen year old AUS record in the 50m Men's Breaststroke. Liew's set the new record in the event final with a time of 28.48 beating the old time of 28.64 set in 2000 by Chris Stewart. The record setting swim is also the fourth fastest 50m breaststroke time this year in the CIS.

Day 2

The Tigers had their toughest test of the season yet in McGill, a perennial CIS ranked team.

"We were excited heading into Sunday knowing that we were basically tied with McGill, we wanted to win in our own building," said Tigers Head Coach Lance Cansdale.

"We had a lot of great swims from rookie who stepped up."

The Tigers had four more swimmers qualify on Sunday for nationals bringing the season total to an impressive eighteen qualifiers.

Dalhousie had seven individual event winners on Sunday and placed second in both the men's and women's Freestyle Relays. The Tigers event winners on Sunday include:

Meagan Bernier- 800m Freestyle

Kyle Watson- 1500m Freestyle

Rachel Shin- 100m Butterfly

Lucy Macleod- 50m Freestyle

Tony Liew-50m Freestyle

Keenan Teghtsoonian- 400m IM

Sean Berrigan- 50m Backstroke

McGill won six individual races and took first in both the men's and women's 400m Freestyle Relays. Acadia won three individual races.

The next AUS Invitational Meet is hosted by UPEI on Saturday, January 17 and Sunday, January 18.
