Tigers, Panthers play to 1-1 draw

Tigers, Panthers play to 1-1 draw

The Tigers now face a do or die situation after tying the UPEI Panthers this afternoon at Wickwire Field. It was a gritty match that featured lots of aggressive play from both sides, especially in the second half.

Neither goalie was tested much in the first half, until Tigers captain and fifth-year striker Tyler Lewars broke the tie when fired a beautiful ball past Panthers keeper Nathan Ford in the 41st minute, scoring his first goal of the season.

The intensity of the match increased in the second half with both teams vying desperately for points in the extremely tight AUS down the stretch. UPEI's Adam Lowther got the first yellow card of the second half in the 48th minute, but it certainly wouldn't be the last.

James Mallard evened things up in the 60th minute when he fired the ball through a crowd past Tigers keeper Jason Ross.

Ryan Lewars received his second yellow card in the 63rd minute, sending him off for the rest of the game and leaving the Tigers with just ten men. Despite a relentless attack from the Panthers, the Tigers managed to stave off the pressure and the teams played to a 1-1 draw as time expired.

The Panthers sit two points ahead of the Tigers in the standings and are in fourth with 15 points, while the Tigers are hot on their heels with 13 points in fifth place. Both teams will look to finish strong as they look to secure spots in the 2014 AUS Championship in St. John's.

Both teams finish their seasons at home next weekend, as the Panthers host Memorial and Cape Breton, while the Tigers face Memorial and StFX.
