3 wins at Laval Tournament

Dalhousie's men's basketball team travelled to compete in Université de Laval's tournament on October 23rd, 24th, and 25th. The Tigers played against Algoma, Thetford Prep, and Toronto and the team came away from the tournament with 3 pre-season wins added to their record.

On Friday, October 23rd, the Tigers finished with an 82-53 win for their first game against the Algoma Thunderbirds. The Tigers held a solid defense throughout the entire game and dominated the rebounds with 45 compared to Algoma's 32. Dalhousie's Sean Dodds (Ottawa, ON) was top scorer with 14 points in his 18 minutes of play. Algoma's captain, Sean Clendinning (Orillia, ON), followed close behind with 13 points in his 26 minutes of play. On the Tigers' side, Ritchie Kanza Mata (Toronto, ON) had an excellent floor game with 9 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals throughout the game.

The Dalhousie Tigers played Thetford Prep on Saturday the 24th which finished at an 84-73 win for the Tigers. Dalhousie was led by Sven Stammberger (Halifax, NS) at 14 points and 8 rebounds, Kash Lawrence (Brampton, ON) at 14 points and 8 rebounds, Cedric Sanogo (Montreal, QC) at 13 points, and Ritchie Kanza Mata at 11 points and 8 assists. On Thetford's side, Quincy Guerrier was top scorer with 19 points and was closely followed by his teammate, Kasey Buzas.

In the championship game on Sunday the 25th, the Tigers finished with a close win at 73-72 against the Toronto Varsity Blues. Dalhousie started with the lead at the end of the first quarter, but Toronto surpassed them by the half with a socre of 37-33 for the Varsity Blues. At the end of the game, both teams were tied up with 4 seconds to go, but William Yengue (Douala, Cameroon) hit the game winning free throw, earning the Tigers their extra point and the win. Even after this extra point, the Varsity Blues tried for another point which was blocked by Sven Stammberger with 2 seconds on the clock which secured the win for Dalhousie. The Tigers were led by tournament MVP Kash Lawrence who had 26 points and 13 rebounds in the championship game. Jordan Aquino-Serjue (Montreal, QC), a tournament all-star, added 20 points and 6'9 pinch freshman, Sascha Kappos (Miami, FL), added 10.

The Tigers will have their first regular season game on Friday, November 6th in their home opener at 8pm against the UNB Varsity Reds in the Dalplex.
