The Memorial Sea-Hawks grinded out a tough, gritty win against the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday night, staving off a late fourth quarter surge by the Tigers to go on to win 66-61.

The Tigers couldn't get anything to drop from the field, shooting 28.8% (21-73), and were ice cold from deep, shooting just 3-20. The Sea-Hawks had four starters in double figures.

The Sea-Hawks came out flying, catching the Tigers flat footed to start the game. The Tigers were without star big man Devon Stedman, who is out with an ankle injury. Memorial was up 19-7 late in the first quarter, before the Tigers tacked on four late points to trim the lead to eight as they trailed 19-11 after the first quarter.

The Sea-Hawks began the second quarter on a 9-0 run before Ritchie Kanza Mata's jump shot with 4:29 remaining broke the dry streak for the Tigers. Jacob Ranton's threewith 2:39 extended the Sea-Hawk's lead to 34-16.

The Tigers exploded back into the game in the third quarter and Jarred Reid nailed a pair of free throws with 5:58 left to make it a four point game, but Memorial kept getting buckets when it counted.

Kanza Mata put the team on his back in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Sea-Hawks went on to win 66-61, winning just their second game of the year. The Tigers drop to 3-12 and slip into eighth place with the loss.

Caleb Gould had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double to lead the Sea-Hawk, while Vasilije Curcic chipped in 13 points and ten rebounds.

Kanza Mata had a monster game for the Tigers, dropping 15 points, five rebounds, five assists, and four steals in the loss. Jarred Reid added 14 points and five assists.

The teams will do battle again tomorrow at the Dalplex at 1:00pm.
