Flash Back Friday (Dec. 4)

Sjaan Scully

This Friday, we are flashing back ten years to the 2005-06 women’s hockey season. The women’s hockey program at Dalhousie only began in 2002, so it was a considerably new program to the University.

Lesley Jordan was head coach for the team since its inception in 2002. She headed the women’s hockey team for nine years until the current coach, Sean Fraser, took over in 2011. Jordan won 86 games while coaching the Tigers and won AUS coach of the year as well as CIS coach of the year in 2006.

During the 2005-06 season, the team earned a second place finish in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) playoffs which brought them to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Champions to finish their season.

Leah Merkley was named as an AUS first team all-star for her performance that year and teammate Sarah Beckman was one of the AUS second team all-stars. Beckman was also part of the AUS all-rookie team for that year.

Student-athlete Leah Kutcher earned two very respectable awards in 2006. She won both the AUS student-athlete and community service award as well as the CIS Marion Hilliard award. The Marion Hilliard award is given to a female ice hockey player from the CIS who exhibits outstanding achievement in hockey, academics and community involvement.

The current 2015-16 women’s hockey team will have their last regular season game of 2015 against the St. Thomas Tommies on December 5th at the Civic Arena, 4:30pm. The team will return in 2016 to finish off the remainder of the season.
