First Year Feature - Women's Soccer

Students face many challenges with the transition from high school to college athletics. We’re highlighting athletes from all seven varsity teams each month this season who overcame adversity and are on the path to becoming great athletes.

This month we were astonished by the performance of rising soccer star Elise Evans. Evans is an Arts and Social Science major that is from the city of Toronto, Ontario.

How long have you been playing soccer?
14 years - since I was 4 years old.

Have you always played striker?
I started out playing defence but then really fell in love with driving and beating players down the line for a cross or shot, so my coach decided to move me to a more attacking position as a winger.

Did you play any other sports growing up?
I participated in a lot of school sports growing up, including basketball, volleyball, cross country, track and field, and even tried gymnastics and high diving for a little bit outside of school, but soccer was the main thing I always stuck with.

Who is somebody in sport you admired growing up and why?
A very predictable answer, but I always remember being a huge Christine Sinclair fan when I was younger for the simple reason that I loved how effective and efficient she was when it came to scoring goals. I really enjoyed and admired how she was so calm on the ball and made it look so easy.

What is the most memorable moment in your career so far?
The most memorable moment in my career so far would definitely be winning the Ontario Cup in 2021. It was one of the only times in my life I think I've cried happy tears. My team went through a lot of ups and downs throughout the tournament and season that summer, but to come out on top with all my best friends, knowing the hard work that went into it, was something I’ll never forget. My best friends outside of soccer as well as my family also came to watch, which made it an extra special win.

What made you choose Dalhousie University?
I chose Dalhousie University because it was the perfect balance of everything I was looking for. I knew I would be able to get a great education while playing for a highly competitive and skilled team with an amazing coaching staff. Also, I fell in love with Halifax because of the friendly people, and the fact that you get the ocean and scenery, city feel, and tight knit campus all in one place.

Did any of your family members attend Dalhousie University?
Yes, my Uncle Ryan, as well as a few of my great uncles attended Dalhousie University and absolutely loved it.

What are some differences you’ve noticed being a part of a DAL team compared to your previous teams?
The level of competition is definitely higher and the speed of play was something that took some adjusting to. I think the overall attitude towards training and playing is more intense, but undoubtedly in a positive way. Everyone is really committed and works super hard, but is very uplifting at the same time, which is super motivating to be surrounded by.

How would you describe your time with the team so far?
The team has been incredibly kind and welcoming, and has made the transition as easy as it possibly could be. Everyone is more than willing to help or lend a hand with absolutely anything, and has made a much appreciated effort to make the rookies truly feel included and part of the team. I had a lot of fun throughout preseason especially with all the team bonding activities, and can’t wait to get to play with and get to know all the girls better. It’s a really special environment to be in, full of not only great players, but great people.

What are some of your interests outside of sports?
Besides sports, I love spending time with family and friends, going on long walks or doing anything outside, playing guitar, trying new restaurants, and listening to music.

Any pre-game superstitions/routines?
I don’t have any super specific pre-game superstitions or routines, but I usually chew gum, listen to some music to get me hyped up, which usually consists mainly of Drake, and make sure my shoes are double, if not triple knotted, because I’m already clumsy enough as is.

What is the biggest risk you’ve taken so far in your athletic career?
The biggest risk I’ve taken so far in my athletic career would be making the decision to play in university and going through the recruitment process. I went through a lot of self-doubt and worrying that I wouldn’t be good enough to play at that level, but I could not be more happy that I stuck it through and chose to take on the challenge. I’m super pumped to be part of the team and get started with the season, and am very excited to learn from the coaches and other players, as well as see how far I can push myself towards becoming a better player and person.

What was the coolest experience you’ve had so far this year?
I've been super lucky to have had lots of cool experiences so far this year, but the top moments would be taking a jeep off roading in Aruba, going with my best friends to Montreal for the weekend, and getting to play soccer here.

Any hidden talents?
Nothing super interesting, but I still have a few gymnastics moves up my sleeve.
