First Year Feature - April

First Year Feature - April
The transition from high school to university athletics can be challenging for any first-year student-athlete. We’re featuring first-year athletes from each of our seven varsity sports each month this season. This month we take a closer look at women's track and field team member Abbi Gaudry and his path to the AUS!
Gaudry is from Fall River, Nova Scotia and is majoring in kinesiology.

How long have you been competing in track and field?

I started track and field in grade seven!  So, I’ve been doing it for about six years.

Have you always competed in the same events?

I’ve always done as many events as I possibly could at meets, which was usually about five.  About three years ago my coach suggested doing a heptathlon (seven events).  I ended up loving the atmosphere of being with the same group of girls for a whole weekend. Since I’d already been doing so many events it was an easy adjustment!  Ever since then, I’ve been training as a heptathlete/pentathlete.

Did you play any other sports growing up?

Growing up I played lots of sports.  All throughout high school I was on the volleyball and basketball team. I also played flag football and danced when I was younger.  My parents always encouraged being a multi-sport athlete.

What is the favourite part of track and field?

My favourite part about track and field is that it’s an individual and a team sport.  You get to train as a team and push each other. However, there’s a lot of personal growth because in the end, you're competing on your own. Even though you're responsible for your results, the team is always around cheering you on. You get the best of both worlds.

Who is somebody in sports you admired growing up and why?

I always admired my parents growing up.  Both coming from high level sport backgrounds, they have always given me the best support.  They taught me to always be a leader and how to adapt and overcome challenges.  I will forever be grateful for them driving me hours away for a thirty second race or for coaching me through the pandemic when no others could. They have always been my biggest cheerleaders through failure and success.

What is the most memorable moment in your career so far?

The most memorable moment in my career so far was being able to represent Nova Scotia at the 2019 Legion Nationals. It was my first time competing in a heptathlon at the national level and was an awesome experience. This competition was also in Cape Breton, so I got to compete in my home province and in front of my family and friends which made it so much more meaningful. It was super exciting when they called me the “hometown girl” on the loudspeaker while announcing the first day points.

What made you choose Dalhousie University?

I chose Dalhousie for a variety of reasons. The first was because during the recruiting process the coaches truly impressed me the most, they were the kindest and most helpful. Being a local girl, I also knew many athletes on the team already and a few of the coaches. It would be an extremely easy transition! Another reason was that Dal has an extremely competitive team that I knew I could improve on! On top of this, being close to home and having a great Kinesiology program were also big perks.

What songs/artists are in your gameday playlist?

I really like to warm up to rock. So, AC/DC, Twisted Sister, Guns N Roses, or even Rob Zombie.

What are some differences you’ve noticed being a part of a DAL team compared to your previous teams?

A big difference I’ve noticed is having much better support! Having access to team trainers, the high-performance room, physio, and tutors have been an awesome addition to training and school. The level of all the athletes is also much higher which helps push me to become the best athlete I can be!

How would you describe your time with the team so far?

My time with the team so far has been full of challenging work (in a good way) and a very fun, motivational and welcoming atmosphere.

How have you enjoyed classes/the university so far?

Classes have been a big change from high school, but I’m slowly adjusting!  Due to Covid the whole “university experience” hasn’t been as prevalent, but I’m enjoying the campus and meeting everyone new at residence.

What are some of your interests outside of sports?

Whenever I’m not training, I’m usually spending time with family and friends, or with my head stuck in a book.  I also dream about all the travelling I want to do when the pandemic is over!

Fast Fact Questions

Favourite food? My favourite food would have to be either fruit tarts or French onion soup!

Favourite movie? My favourite movie is Captain America: Civil War or Mama Mia.  I could never choose!

Must have warm-up song or current favourite song? I honestly don’t have a favourite warm-up song, anything upbeat that I can dance to I’m happy with!

Favourite professional athlete or team? I love Damian Warner! He’s a Canadian decathlete and just won at the Tokyo Olympics!

What do you want to be when you grow up? When I grow up I want to be a teacher and a coach.

Any pre-game superstitions/routines? Track meets are usually two days. For the first day I always try to have my hair in a braid, and the second is always a ponytail.  I also always wear a certain necklace; I swear it gives me good luck!
