First Year Feature Presented by Outcast - January

The transition from high school to university athletics can be challenging for any first-year student-athlete. Brought to you in partnership with Outcast Upcycled Nutrition, we’re featuring first-year athletes from each of our seven varsity sports each month this season. This month we take a closer look at men’s basketball player Nathan Barton and his path to the AUS!

Barton is from Wetaskiwin, Alberta and is majoring in science.

How long have you played your sport?

I started playing basketball when I was 10 years old, in grade five.

Have you always played the same position?

When I was younger, I played centre, then once I got to high school, I primarily played power forward.

What other sports did you play growing up?

I played a lot of hockey when I was younger and up until grade seven, I played soccer. After that, I focused solely on basketball.

Why do you love basketball?

I love how universal the game is. You can find courts and a game anywhere. Also, the team aspect and the bonds you build with teammates and coaches are amazing.

Who is somebody in sport you admired growing up and why?

I am the youngest in my family, so growing up I admired the athletic abilities of my two older brothers and my Dad.

What has been the most memorable moment in your career so far?

My most memorable moment in basketball was playing Big Baller Brand in LA on my AAU team.

What made you choose Dalhousie University?

I was attracted to the strong academics at Dal and the competitive basketball program. When I visited the campus with Coach Plato, it felt like the right fit for me.

What are some differences you’ve noticed being a part of a DAL team compared to previous teams?

The biggest difference I noticed with being a part of the Dal basketball team is the level of intensity on the court.

How have you enjoyed your time with the team so far?

I’ve really enjoyed getting to know my teammates and my coaches on a competitive level and on a personal level so far. I’ve also appreciated the challenge to be better every day.

How have you enjoyed classes/the university so far?

The classes have been good. It was difficult to get used to the online aspect at first.

What are some of your interests outside of sports?

I like to play 2K games with my friends. I also enjoy snowboarding in the winter.
