First Year Feature Presented by Outcast - December

The transition from high school to university athletics can be challenging for any first-year student-athlete. Brought to you in partnership with Outcast Upcycled Nutrition, we’re featuring first-year athletes from each of our seven varsity sports each month this season. This month we take a closer look at women’s volleyball player Brett Boldon and her path to the AUS!

Boldon is from Fredericton, N.B. and is a setter on the team. She is majoring in science.

How long have you played your sport?

Since I was 4! So almost 15 years.

Have you always played the same position?

No, in high school I also played right side and libero

What other sports did you play growing up?

I did a lot of track and field when I was younger. I also played a bit of basketball and ultimate frisbee, but volleyball was always my favourite!

Why do you love volleyball so much?

I grew up playing the sport with my family, so it’s become part of my life. It also keeps me fit and I love spending time with my teammates!

Who is someone in sport you admired growing up and why?

I really admire Melissa Humana-Paraedes (Canadian beach volleyball player). I love watching her; she’s so athletic and reads the game incredibly well! She can do it all so its super motivating to watch her on the beach.

What is your most memorable moment in your career so far?

So far, my most memorable moment has been receiving the Volleyball New Brunswick female athlete of the year award.

What made you choose Dalhousie University?

Dal has an amazing reputation academically and athletically. Coach Rick (Scott) has really established a solid team culture that motivates the team to thrive on and off the court.

Did any of your family members attend Dalhousie University?

No - both my parents played volleyball for UNB.

What are some differences you have noticed being a part of a DAL team compared to previous teams?

The big difference is that everyone is super committed and wants to put the work in! (I also really like the Tiger gear!)

How have you enjoyed your time with the team so far?

Yes!!! I love the team.

How have you enjoyed classes/the university so far?

Taking classes online is definitely a different ball game but I love my program so far.

What are some of your interests outside of sports?

I really like hiking, travelling, camping, and spending time with my family and my pets!
