Edmonton Stingers add Dynamic Trio Through 2020 CEBL U SPORTS Draft

Edmonton Stingers • Mar 26, 2020
EDMONTON - The Edmonton Stingers have added two Tigers and a Lion to the Hive this summer.

Stingers general manager and head coach Jermaine Small made three selections in the 2020 CEBL U SPORTS Draft on Thursday, which saw 21 of the U Sports athletes across the country, chosen.

In the first round (4th overall), the Stingers selected power forward Alexander Sascha Kappos from the Dalhousie University Tigers. In the second round (11th overall), the team took guard Prince Kamunga from the York University Lions and with their final selection in the third round (18th overall) the Stingers drafted guard Xavier Ochu from the Dalhousie University Tigers.

Kappos, wrapped up his five-year university career at Dalhousie in 2019-20. In his final year with the Tigers, he helped lead the program to the Atlantic University Sport conference championship and a berth in the Final 8 Championship in Ottawa, where they captured the silver medal after losing to the Carleton Ravens in the championship game.

In 20 games (19 starts), Kappos averaged 11.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game for the Tigers. In 90 career games (52 starts), Kappos averaged 8.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game with Dalhousie.

“He’s a guy that’s gotten better every year he’s played in U Sports. He plays hard on both sides of the ball and he’s got all the attributes to play pro,” said Small.

“When I looked at all of the bigs across the country at the U Sports level, he was the most attractive to me. He’s a basketball unicorn. He’s six-foot-10, who can shoot the three-ball really well and he can block shots and run the floor real well.”

Kamunga just completed his third year with York. The six-foot-six, 195 lb guard from Toronto averaged 18.7 points, 9.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 18 games (17 starts).

In 64 career games (46 starts), Kamunga has averaged 11.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game over his three-year university career.

“I scouted against him, and he’s improved every year. I think he’s a diamond in the rough,” said Small.

“He can shoot the three, he’s averaged a block and a steal a game. Prince has the physique to play at the professional level. He’s long and athletic and he rebounds the ball well. Prince has the ability to contribute in many different ways on the floor.”

Ochu wrapped up his third season with Dalhousie. The six-foot-one guard from Milton, Ont. recorded 9.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1.9 steals per game. Ochu earned the AUS Defensive Player of the Year in 2019-20.

“I recruited him when I was at Queens. He shoots the ball well, but where he really stands out is on the defensive side of the ball. He defends hard on every possession and can rebound. He’s the type of player you win with,” said Small.
