In AUS women's volleyball action at the Dalplex, the Dalhousie Tigers defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks three sets to one in a match where the Tigers were in control for most of the match.
In the first set, the Tigers got the early advantage and established the pace by taking a 8-2 lead. They were able to keep the momentum going, eventually taking a 16-5 lead. The Seahawks, who couldn't really get anything going up to this point, were able to start a run of their own to get the score to 20-11 at one point. However, the Tigers was able to rebound and win the first set 25-14.
The second set saw more closely contested play in the first part of the set as Dalhousie took an early 8-4 lead. But, Memorial put together some nice play to narrow the deficit to only 12-8. The Tigers were able to put the clamp down once again by taking a 19-10 lead. They didn't let up for the rest of the second set, winning it 25-11.
As the third set got underway, both teams were stuck in the most even parts of the match. Dalhousie led 8-7 at one point, then entered a series of ties with Memorial at 12-12, 14-14, and 20-20. The Sea-Hawks were able to stave off a straight sets defeat and win the third set 25-23.
In the fourth set, both teams looked poised to repeat what they did in the third set. The score was only 15-10 for the Tigers at one point, but they found their groove once again and powered their way to victory. They won the fourth set 25-14.
The Tigers were led by Mieke DuMont (Kamloops. BC), who had 16 kills, followed by Julie Moore (Halifax, NS) with 10. For blocks, Hannah Aldcorn (Calgary, AB) and Victoria Turcot (Halifax, NS) each had one. Subway Player of the Game Emma Ciprick (Binscarth, MB) had seven kills for the Tigers
For the Sea-Hawks, Kierstin Fey (Selkirk, MB) had 12 kills, while Emma Hackett (Clarenville, NL) and Hailey Oke (Massey Drive, NL) had six kills. In terms of blocks, Fey had four and Jordan Hutchison (Kentville, NS) had three.
The Tigers play next this Saturday against the Saint Mary's Huskies at 2:00 pm at the Homburg Centre, while the Seahawks hit the court next against the Acadia Axewomen this Friday in Wolfville at 7.
