(Halifax, NS) – In the first day of a back to back matchup, the Dalhousie Tigers hosted the Memorial Sea-Hawks in Friday night action at the Dalplex. The Tigers made a habit of jumping out front early in sets and held on to take a quick 3-0 victory.
The Tigers got out to a blistering start offensively, picking up the game's first nine points in a row on four kills from Julie Moore (Halifax, NS), and a fifth from Victoria Haworth (Waverley, NS).
Just before the technical break, the a few nice rallies were played with fantastic digs coming from both liberos, with Lauren Fenez (Hammonds Plains, NS) and Catherine Callaghan (Halifax, NS) both picking up multiple digs on the plays.
Heading into the technical timeout, the Tigers led the first set 16-5.
The Sea-Hawks picked up a few points on a kill from Emma Hackett (Clarenville, NL), and a nice service ace from Sophia Gibbons (Paradise, NL), but the Tigers continued to extend their lead with Moore and Haworth picking up more kills.
The Tigers were able to close out the first set quickly with serves from Julie Moore causing problems for the Sea-Hawks defence, and the Tigers took the first set 25-10.
After the Tigers opened up the second set with a quick 5-1 lead on attacking errors, the Sea-Hawks hitters found their mark and were able to string together a run of their own and tie the set up at 7-7 thanks to a few big kills from Kiersten Fey (Selkirk, MB).
The teams traded points before the break, but the Tigers combined two kills by Moore with a big block from Haworth and Mieke DuMont (Kamloops, BC) to take a 16-13 lead into the technical timeout.
Coming out of the break, the Tigers put together four straight points with DuMont picking up back to back kills, as well as an ace from Moore, forcing a Sea-Hawks timeout with the Tigers leading 20-13.
The Tigers continued to pick up some big kills, and Courtney Baker (Bridgewater, NS) put the set away on a crafty tip and the Tigers took the second set 25-15.
The teams traded runs early in the third set, with the Tigers once again starting off hot, jumping out to a 7-1 lead on kills from DuMont and Haworth. The Sea-Hawks made a quick three point run with kills from Fey and Sarah Dawe (Mount Pearl, NL).
The Tigers maintained their lead by trading points before the break with Victoria Turcot (Halifax, NS) hammering home the final kill before the timeout to put the Tigers up 16-9.
The Sea-Hawks continued to get their scoring on kills from Fey and Jordan Hutchison (Kentville, NS), but the Tigers stretched their lead by spreading the attacks to different hitters.
The Tigers swept the match, taking the third set on a big block from Mieke DuMont to take the 25-15 set win, and 3-0 victory in the match.
Kiersten Fey led the Sea-Hawks with nine kills, while Hutchison picked up four.
DuMont finished with a game-high 12 kills, as well as getting it done on the defensive side with 10 digs. Courtney Baker assisted on 32 of of the Tigers kills, as well as picking up four of her own. Victoria Haworth earned the Subway Player of the Game title with eight kills and two big blocks.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow at the Dalplex, with a 6:00 start time.
