Undefeated Tigers take out SMU 3-1

(HALIFAX N.S.) - The Dalhousie Tigers continued their undefeated season with a 3-1 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies on Sunday November 6 at the Dalplex. This was the sixth consecutive win of the season for the Tigers who are now a perfect 6-0. The Huskies received their second loss of season and currently sit at 5-2 on the year.

The Huskies opened the game with a quick lead over the Tigers by a score of 3-1, but the Tigers woke up and smashed a quick four points to regain the lead by a score of 5-3.

At the technical timeout, the Tigers were in good standing with a four-point lead over the Huskies with a score of 16-12.

After the time out, Courtney Baker on the Tigers started off an excellent five point serving streak with a powerful service ace. The score at this point was 22-13.

The Huskies would attempt to claw their way back but unfortunately came up short and let the Tigers take the first set by a score of 25-17.

After dropping the first point of the second to the Huskies, Tigers player Lauren Koskowich went on a four-point serving streak. This streak, like Bakers in the first set, started with an impressive service ace.

The remainder of the set would play out with some exciting see-saw action for the 193 fans in attendance at the Dalplex. The set eventually went to the the Tigers who closed it out by a score of 25-14.

The third set continued with the back and forth action as both teams stole the lead from one another numerous times. It wasn't until the score was 9-7 for the Tigers when the Huskies really started to turn up the heat. For the remainder of the set, the Huskies looked like a brand-new team as they were getting quality digs and capitalizing on several kill opportunities.

The Tigers, on the other hand, had a tough time keeping their kills attempts in the boundary lines. This would cost the Tigers as they ended up dropping their first set of the season by a set score of 25-19.

The Tigers came out in the fourth set looking for revenge with an excellent four-point run led by Koskowich. This run was cut at four when Erin Smith had an aggressive kill to put the Huskies on the board.

At the technical time out the Tigers led by a score of 16-11. The Huskies collected another seven points but came up short as they let the Tigers not only take the set but also the match by a score of 25-18

Saint Mary's was led by Erin Smith who recorded a total of ten points in the match. Smith also had seven kills and two service aces.

Tigers player Courtney Baker led the undefeated squad to victory with a team high 18 points. Baker also recorded 13 kills, two service aces and ten digs.

The Tigers are back in action at home Friday November 11 against the Acadia Axewomen. The game is set to start at 7 pm.

The SMU Huskies will travel to Memorial for a three-game weekend starting on Friday November 11. Their first game begins at 6:30.
