Tigers stay undefeated with 3-1 win over Huskies

The Dalhousie Tigers remain unbeaten in the Dalhousie Women's Volleyball Invitational after taking down their city rivals, the Saint Mary's Huskies by a score of 25-13, 20-25, 25-17 25-19. The two sides have met for the past four years in the AUS championship and delivered another thrilling match on Saturday night at the Dalplex. 

 

Dalhousie took the first set with relative ease, holding the lead throughout the whole set. Anne Dunn-Suen continued to look like the best player on the court hammering away 4 kills. The Tigers jumped out to a 7-2 advantage early and never gave the Huskies a chance to claw their way back in, winning the set 25-13.

 

The Huskies ended the Tigers 7-set winning streak in the 2nd set of the match, taking it 25-20. Shelby Charlton had 12 straight serves early on giving the Huskies a 12-1 lead. Despite the huge deficit, the Tigers chipped away slowly cutting the lead to two at 19-17. The young Saint Mary's team was not fazed by the comeback and buckled down to close out the set.

 

Dalhousie bounced back after dropping the first set of the weekend, capturing the third 25-17. With the help of a 12-5 run in the middle of the frame the Tigers took a 2-1 set lead over the Huskies.

 

Led by the strong play of Mieke DuMont in the fourth set the Tigers won their third set of the match 25-19. DuMont was an absolute powerhouse in the game hitting a game-high 20 kills. DuMont was effective all over the court, displaying her backcourt hitting ability as well as her defence with 10 digs.

 

Saint Mary's libero, Hannah Stienburg led all play with 21 digs.

 

The Tigers, now 3-0 will advance to the championship game against Acadia, Sunday afternoon at 1pm. The Huskies will play in the consolation game at 11am against the UdeM Aigles Bleues.
