DuMont leads Tigers to 3-0 victory over Axewomen

DuMont leads Tigers to 3-0 victory over Axewomen

On day 2 of the Dalhousie women's volleyball invitational at the Dalplex the Tigers took down the Acadia Axewomen 25-18, 25-20, 25-12. Both squads came into Saturday's match with some confidence after winning each of their first games on Friday night.

Once again the Tigers were led by the tandem of Anna Dunn-Suen and Mieke DuMont who both had 5 kills. DuMont and rookie Courtney Baker led the team in digs with 9 a piece. On the other side of the net it seemed like Hillary Monette had a touch on everything with 18 digs.

The Tigers took the first set by capitalizing on some unfortunate digging errors by the Axewomen. Dalhousie went on an 8-1 run halfway through the first putting things out of reach for the Axewomen. Acadia tried to climb their way back in to the set but the Tigers closed strong winning 25-18.

A similar story line played out in the second as Dalhousie was able to go on a run in the middle of the set stretching an 11-10 lead to a 19-13 one in no time. The quick lapse burned the Axewomen for the second time as they tried to rally back from the deficit but ran out of points. The Tigers took the second set 25-20.

Abby Czenze opened the third set with 5 straight serves, giving the Tiger an early lead that they would never relinquish. Czenze's deep floater serve buckled the Acadia defense allowing the Tigers to pounce on the free balls they were given. The deficit grew as the set ran its course for a final score of 25-12 Dalhousie.

The Tigers have yet to drop a set in their first two matches while Acadia falls to 1-1 and will have a "win and you're in" situation in their next game Saturday evening at 6pm against UdeM. Dalhousie will face Saint Mary's at 8pm in the Dalplex.
