Dalhousie University women’s volleyball head coach Rick Scott is pleased to announce the commitment Courtney Baker, Victoria Haworth, and Lauren Koskowich to the Tigers 2015-16 roster.
A 6’0 setter, Courtney Baker played her high school career with the Bridgewater Junior-Senior High School Vikings, leading them to six regional and two senior high school provincial championship titles. A former rookie of the year, she has also been her team’s MVP.
A member of the Bridgewater Chill Volleyball Club for the past seven years, Baker led them to three provincial championship titles in her U14, U16 and U17 seasons. She was named to the championship all-star team at both the U14 and U16 championships and was the tournament MVP at the U17 championship.
The Bridgewater, N.S. native has competed nationally as a member of Volleyball Nova Scotia’s provincial team since 2010, taking home both a gold and a bronze in each of her U16 seasons. She was also recently identified by the junior national team.
Head coach Rick Scott is excited to welcome Courtney to the program. “Courtney is an explosive and dynamic athlete with great potential. She has the ability to set or attack which makes her a versatile and valuable player.”
An honours student, Courtney will be joining Dalhousie’s Kinesiology program this fall.
“I’m very excited about becoming a Tiger,” says Baker. “I hope to become an asset in helping the team succeed in the future.”
Also joining the Tigers this fall is Waverley, N.S. native Victoria Haworth. A 6’1 middle, Haworth has started for the Lockview High School’s senior varsity volleyball team since grade nine. She was a freshman and senior Scholar Athlete, a three-time Metro High School all-star and will receive the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation’s Exemplary Participation Award this coming May.
Haworth has played for both the Halifax Tigers and Bridgewater Chill club teams, earning three provincial titles and two all-star selections. At the provincial level, she has represented Nova Scotia three times including National Team Challenge Cup last summer and has been a member of the Nova Scotia Beach team since 2011.
“We are thrilled to have Victoria join our program,” says Scott. “She has great size and a very fast arm swing which makes her a powerful attacker. She is a top notch student and excellent leader that is a great fit for our Tigers program.”
A stellar student, Haworth has been on the Principal’s List since grade nine, maintaining an academic average above 95% and is enrolled in Dalhousie’s Medical Science program.
“Playing on the Dalhousie women’s volleyball team feels like the perfect fit for me,” says Haworth. “Rick Scott is a knowledgeable and talented coach and I look forward to working more closely with him, his staff and my fellow teammates.”
Lauren Koskowich, a 5’11 middle from Calgary, Alberta, joins the Tigers after a successful volleyball career with the William Aberhart Orange High School volleyball team. She helped lead them to a junior city championship in 2012 and senior silver and gold city championships in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
As a member of the Junior Dino’s Volleyball Club, Koskowich helped earn them two provincial championships plus gold (2014) and bronze (2013) finishes at the national championship.
“Lauren comes from the highly regarded and successful Calgary Dino’s volleyball club where she played under head coach Ray LeVertu,” says Scott. “Lauren’s experience has allowed her to develop into an excellent all-around player. She has an outstanding work ethic and she is a very motivated student-athlete.”
An honours student, Koskowich has been accepted to Dalhousie’s Engineering program.
“I am looking forward to being a part of a great volleyball program at a school with strong academics,’ says Koskowich. “I’m thrilled to be playing at the next level and I’m ready for the challenges it will bring!”
