Tigers sweep Huskies in three

(HALIFAX, N.S.)--The Homburg Centre saw the DAL Tigers sweep the SMU Huskies 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 30-28) Thursday night in a highly anticipated AUS women's volleyball match.

Saint Mary's (11-5) saw their three game win streak halted and Dal's (10-6) on an eight game streak to end the AUS regular season.

DAL's Mieke Dumont (Kamloops, BC) had 13 kills and Anna Dunn-Sven (HALIFAX, NS) 11 kills while Marisa Mota (Kitchener, ON) added 25 digs for the Tigers.

A 7-5 Dalhouse lead early in the first was extended to end the set 25-21 for DAL.

The second set saw the Huskies up 10-7 before Dalhousie tied it 13-13. The Tigers used a 4-0 run and built leads of 17-13, 19-18, and won the set 25-21.

Needing to win the third set to continue the match, the Huskies threw everything at the two-time defending AUS champion Tigers'. Ties of 14-14, 16-16, 18-18, 19-19, 20-20, 22-22, 23-23, 24-24, 25-25, sent the match into extra points.

With SMU up 26-25, a Dalhousie attack attempt caught enough inside court for the Tiger kill 26-26. Both teams traded points to get to 28-28 when two straight Dal points ended the match 30-28.

Fourth year players Shelby Michaels (Mill Bay, BC), Laurel O'Bright (Ottawa, ON), and Shelby Charlton (Strathroy, ON) played their final home game on campus Thursday night.

Tessa Michaels (Mill Bay, BC) and Maddie Clark (Ottawa, ON) had 16 kills apiece while Rachel Windhorst (Surrey, BC) added 13 kills, Elly Prince (Calgary, AB) eight kills, and Erin Smith (Moncton, NB) finished with two kills. Natalie MacPherson (Fredericton, NB) had one block solo.

Saint Mary's will be the #1 seed for the 2015 SUBWAY AUS women's volleyball championships February 13th-15th hosted by UNB.
