Memorial tops Dalhousie 1-0 in season opener

In the AUS regular season, women's soccer season opener, the Memorial Sea-Hawks downed the Dalhousie Tigers 1-0.

Both teams started off with strong defending strategies with neither team having many close chances in the opening 10 minutes. The Sea-Hawks then tried to capitalize off a several crosses from defender Claire Kean (St. Johns, NL) but could not connect their feet with the ball.

The teams headed to the locker rooms at halftime knotted at zeros.

In the 50th minute, Sea-Hawks defender Kendra Schram (Brandon, MB) crossed the ball, bouncing it off the crossbar, which then found its way to Sarah Jones (Marystown, NL) who hit it past Tigers goalie Emily Toth (Markham, ON) to gain a 1-0 lead.

Shortly after, Tigers Chloe Richardson beat Sea-Hawks goalie Shannon Galway (St. Johns, NL) only to slide the ball just wide of the net, keeping the score at 1-0. The Tigers had another chance during injury time off a free kick close to the Sea-Hawks net but did not make it past the Memorial goalie.

With a strong showing of Sea-Hawks defence, the game ended in a 1-0 win for the Memorial Sea-Hawks.

The Tigers and Sea-Hawks return to the field on Sunday for the second game of the Memorial home game stand. Kick off is set for 10:30am.
