(Halifax, NS) – The Memorial Sea-Hawks took a trip across the water to visit the Dalhousie Tigers at Wickwire field on Sunday. Both teams came into the meeting sitting atop the AUS rankings with identical 3-0 records, but Memorial managed to keep theirs perfect at the end of the day, winning 1-0.
The first half was a battle of the keepers, as the game started off with shots from outside the box coming from Sea-Hawks Jessie Noseworthy (St. John's, NL) and Nicole Torraville (St. John's, NL), but both were stopped with no problem by Tigers keeper Kate Fines (Halifax, NS).
The Sea-Hawks created chances off of corner kicks early in the first half, but each scrum was broken up by the Tigers defence.
The Tigers best chances came in the dying minutes of the half as shots came from Olivia MacIntyre (Sydney, NS) and Stephanie Dyck (Mississauga, ON), but both were handled by Memorial keeper Sydney Walsh (St. John's, NL)
The first half of the match came to an end as a scoreless draw.
Memorial had the first chance of the second half on a well-placed shot from Emily Bailey (Mount Pearl, NL) but the play ended with a great save from Fines.
The Tigers had one of the best chances of the match on a scramble in front after a strike from MacIntyre, but Walsh came up with another timely save.
The Sea-Hawks were the first to find the back of the net in the 74th minute. After a set-up from Jane Pope (St. John's, NL), Jessie Noseworthy was able to bury a shot into the corner of the net to make it 1-0.
Dal came back firing with a chance of their own from Haley Birrell (Hammonds Plains, NS), but Walsh was solid once again. The Tigers put plenty of pressure on the Sea-Hawks defence as the final minutes were winding down, but were unable to find the net.
As time ran out, the first goal proved to be the only one needed as Memorial won by a score of 1-0.
The Subway player of the game was game winning goal scorer Jessie Noseworthy of the Sea-Hawks.
The Tigers are back in action on the 22nd as they take on StFX at Wickwire field, while Memorial will look to keep their undefeated season alive against Cape Breton on the 23rd.
