FREDERICTON, N.B. — The St. Thomas Tommies pulled off a dramatic 5-4 shootout victory over the Dalhousie Tigers on Friday night at the Grant-Harvey Centre. The game, which saw both teams exchange leads throughout, ended when Claire Nimegeers scored the game-winning goal just 5 seconds into the extra period.
The Tommies (10-5-2) took an early 1-0 lead in the first period, with Tahlia Mallaley finding the back of the net. Dalhousie (10-7-1) responded in the second period with two quick goals from Emma Robertson and a power-play tally from Natasha Falk, putting the Tigers up 2-1. St. Thomas regained the advantage with goals from Jordan Chaulk and Claire Nimegeers, before Robertson added her second goal of the night for Dalhousie, tying the game at 4-all heading into the third period.
Katelin Moffatt scored on the power play in the third to give the Tommies a 4-3 lead, but the Tigers answered with two more power-play goals — one from Abby Larkin and another from Falk — to force overtime.
The deadlock couldn't be broken in the extra frame with neither team able to generate many chances.
Both goalies stood tall in the shootout with STU's Claire Nimegeers the only one to find the back of the net.
Dalhousie goalie Madison King made 33 saves in the loss, while Katie Sweeney of St. Thomas stopped 25 shots to earn the win.
Emma Robertson of Dalhousie was named the player of the game for her two-goal performance.
The Tigers will look to bounce back on Saturday when they face the UNB REDS in Fredericton at 7:00 p.m.
