Two first-period goals were enough to lift the UNB REDS over the Dalhousie Tigers on Friday night at the Halifax Forum.
Dalhousie had a strong start to the first period. Early on, Dalhousie's Jill Imeson (Perth, NL) had a breakaway opportunity, but Cassie McCallum (Rothesay, NB) made a great save for the REDS.
The momentum quickly shifted in the REDS favour. Eight minutes into the game, Jorja Nystrom (Leduc, AB) scored off a rebound from Madelyn Pears (Ottawa, ON) Nystrom's goal would go on to be the game winner for UNB.
Dalhousie struggled to get any going offensively in the first period and the REDS were quickly mounting increasing pressure. Twelve minutes into the game, Melanie Drost (Nepean, ON) scored a beautiful tip shot to double UNB's lead. UNB would end the period outshooting the Tigers 13-2.
The REDS were able to continue their momentum going into the second period. Grace Beer (Oakville, ON) stood on her head in the game, stopping 20 shots after 40 minutes of play.
The Tigers came out after the second intermission and were able to increase pressure on the REDS, spending much more time in their zone than the previous periods. UNB gave a helping hand, going to the box three times in the third period. The Tigers were not able to find the back of the net and the game ended 2-0 for the REDS.
UNB's McCallum earned her first shutout of the season, turning away all nine of the Tigers shots. Dalhousie's Beer stopped 33 shots for the Tigers.
Nystrom was named the player of the game for her game winning goal.
The Tigers return to home ice on Saturday night, looking to rebound against Moncton. The REDS continue their Halifax trip on Saturday at 3:00 PM AT when they face the Saint Mary's Huskies.
