(Halifax, N.S.) Dalhousie University women’s hockey coach Sean Fraser is pleased to announce the commitment of Katrina Mitton, Kennedy Whelan, and Amy Wilson to the Tigers 2018-19 lineup.
Katrina Mitton, a 5’8 defencewoman comes to the Tigers after a successful season with the Etobicoke Jr Dolphins of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), scoring a goal and recording seven assists. Before joining the Dolphins she played Midget AA for three years with the Brantford Icecats. Mitton contributed four goals and 11 assists to help lead them to a gold medal performance at the Esso Cup in the 2015-16 season, after winning the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) provincial championship.
“I always wanted to play university hockey,” says Mitton. “I am excited to have the opportunity to play for such a great school like Dalhousie.”
Mitton has shown not only talent on the ice, but also proficiency in the classroom. Katrina earned honour roll achievement in all four years of high school and has been accepted into the Bachelor of Science program here at Dalhousie.
“Katrina is a solid defender, who has a great first past, and is not afraid to be part of the offence,” says Fraser. “Her strength and speed will cause plenty of problems for our opponents.”
Joining Mitton is fellow PWHL alumna Kennedy Whelan.
A 5’5 forward, Whelan played two seasons with the Brampton Jr. Canadettes. Last season, she recorded seven goals and eight assists in 38 games. Before joining the Canadettes, she played a season of Midget AA with the Barrie Sharks.
“I’m really excited to be on the east coast,” says Whelan. “I am very thankful for the opportunity to play for the Tigers, while furthering my education!”
A native of Alliston, ON, Whelan graduated with honours from Banting Memorial High School in 2017. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Science with a focus in Kinesiology.
“Kennedy is go, go, go, all the time,” says Fraser. “She constantly puts pressure on the opposing teams defence and is one of those players that’s tough to play against. Her high-octane style of play should fit in nicely with our offensive group.”
Joining Whelan on offence is former Canadettes teammate Amy Wilson.
Wilson, a 5’7 forward comes to the Tigers after a successful year with the Brampton Junior Canadettes (PWHL). In the 2017-18 season, she contributed seven goals and eight assists. Before playing for the Canadettes, Wilson played for the Mississauga Junior Chiefs Intermediate AA (PWHL).
“I am extremely excited and honoured to be a Tiger this year,” says Wilson. “I cannot wait to get on the ice and begin this journey.”
A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Wilson is a four-time honour roll student and received an Award of Excellence, for healthy active living education in her grade 12 year. Wilson is enrolled in Dalhousie’s kinesiology program.
“Amy is an offensive threat every time she steps out on the ice,” says Fraser. “She has a high hockey IQ, and always knows where to be. Amy will be a great addition to our forwards this season.”
