In AUS women's hockey action at the Halifax Forum, the Mount Allison Mounties defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 3-0 in a game that saw sound offensive play and great defence give the Mounties the victory.
The first period saw Dalhousie almost open the scoring when Lisa MacLean (Inverness, NS) got the rebound off a point shot, but was stopped. The Mounties ended up getting the first goal when Maddy Koughan (Mermaid, PE) intercepted a botched Dalhousie pass, got a breakaway, and put home a wrist shot at 10:03 to make it 1-0. The Mounties almost got a second when Koughan tried to convert a sliding one-timer, but was stopped to end the first period at 1-0.
In the second period, the quick pace of the play from the first period continued into the middle frame. The Mounties got a good chance when Heather Richards (St. Anthony, NL) got a rebound off a 2 on 1 rush, but was unable to put it in. Dalhousie almost tied it up when Victoria Macintosh (Hammonds Plains, NS) was on a 2 on 1 and put a shot on goal that was stopped to keep it 1-0 after 40 minutes.
As the third period got going, The Mounties finally increased their lead when Abby Beale (Sackville, NB) collected a juicy rebound from the slot on the penalty kill and put it right in at 11:10 to make it 2-0. The Tigers almost got it to within one when MacLean's wraparound attempt was stopped, which led to a wild scramble, where the puck managed to stay out of the net. Mount Allison added some insurance when Beale got a breakaway and put it into an empty net at 18:14 to seal the win.
The Tigers outshot the Mounties 45-16. Subway Player of The Game Keri Martin (Brampton, ON) stopped all 45 shots to get the shutout for the Mounties, while Fabiana Petricca (Woodbridge, ON) made 13 stops for the Tigers.
The Mounties play their next game on Wednesday at 7 against the Moncton Aigles Bleues in Sackville, while the Tigers next see action on Friday at 7 against the St. Thomas Tommies in Fredericton.
