Huskies top Tigers 3-2

The Saint Mary's University Huskies beat their crosstown rival Dalhousie University Tigers 3-2 on Sunday Oct. 30 at Alumni Arena in Halifax NS. It was the fifth consecutive win for the Huskies who improved their record to 5-0-1 on the season. The loss dropped the Tigers to 1-4-1.

Caitlyn Manning (Cambridge, ON) had a big game for the Huskies, factoring on all three Huskies goals with two goals (4,5) and an assist. Kate Barber (Aurora, ON) (1) scored the other Huskies goal, the first of her AUS career.

Jesse Rietveld (Pelham, ON) (2) and Elizabeth MacArthur (Truro, NS) (2) answered with goals for the Tigers.

Rebecca Clark (Keswick, ON) was stellar in goal for the Huskies making 18 saves on 20 shots to pick up her third win of the season. Several of her biggest saves came late in the game with the Tigers pressing for an equalizer.

Mati Barrett (Stittsville, ON) also had a tremendous game between the pipes for the Tigers making 23 saves on 26 shots in the game.

1st

The Huskies opened the scoring at the 15:24 mark of the period. Breanna Lanceleve (Middle Sackville, ON) got the puck to Mary Worndl (Kitchener, ON) on the right half-wall, after a battle on the wall Worndl slid it back to Manning who was covering the right point, Manning walked into the slot an ripped a wrist shot top shelf blocker-side for a 1-0 lead.

Just over a minute later at the 16:36 mark the Huskies added to their lead. Hayley Hallihan (Miramichi, NB) fed Manning the puck as she flew through the neutral zone, she dished to Barber racing in on the left-wing, Barber drove hard to the side of the net and put her shot short-side low blocker to make the score 2-0.

Shots were 9-9 after one.

2nd

The Tigers answered back at the 13:07 mark of the second, just 16 seconds after they killed off a Huskies power-play opportunity. Laura Brooks (Acton ON) sent a feed from just inside her own blue-line to Becca Chilvers (Bradford ON) up the left wing, Chilvers took a stride into the Huskies zone and fed Rietveld who was in behind the Huskies D, Rietveld streaked in on goal and fired a quick shot low glove-side to make it 2-1.

The Huskies came up with a huge penalty-kill shortly after, managing to stifle the Tigers for 1:30 of five-on-three action.

Shots were 16-15 Huskies after two.

3rd

The Huskies restored their two-goal lead at the 11:39 mark of the third. Working on the power-play Worndl fed Lanceleve in behind the Tigers goal, Lanceleve moved to her left towards the attacking right half-wall before turning quickly and sending a pass to Manning standing on the doorstep, Manning deflected the puck upstairs under the bar for a 3-1 score.

The Tigers answered with a power-play goal of their own just over two-minutes later at the 13:47 mark. Courtney Sheedy (Orangeville ON) fed the puck back to Tara Morning (Aurora ON) on the left point, Morning put her shot on goal through traffic, Clark made the initial save and MacArthur was right there to knock home the rebound and make it a 3-2 game.

The Tigers pulled their goalie in the final minute pressing to tie it up and the Huskies were able to rag the puck on the boards in their own zone to close out the game.

The Tigers will go on the road to face the St Thomas Tommies in Fredericton NB on Saturday Nov. 5.

The Huskies will travel to Sackville NB to face the Mount Allison Mounties on Wednesday Nov. 2.
