Women’s hockey Tigers add three players from Ontario’s PWHL

(Halifax, N.S.) - Dalhousie Tigers head coach Sean Fraser is pleased to announce the commitment of Danika Phillips, Fabiana Petricca and Ashely Money to the Tigers for the 2016-17 season. All three players are from the Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) in Ontario.

Danika Phillips will join the Tigers after playing minor hockey in the Barrie Sharks organization. A 5’8 forward, Phillips has played the last two seasons with the Barrie Jr. Sharks. This year’s team captain, Phillips has recorded 18 points in 36 games so far this season. She had 11 points in the 2013-14 season. Before joining the Jr. Sharks, Phillips played midget AA, where she led the team in scoring with 20 points in 21 games in the 2012-13 season.

“Danika adds some size to our roster next season,” says Fraser. “She has quick hands, a relentless work ethic and the ability to make plays at a high tempo. She also has leadership experience which will help us down the road.”

An honour roll student since grade eight, Phillips has received academic excellence awards in history, fitness and exercise science. She was also named varsity hockey MVP in each of the past four years. The Barrie, Ontario native has been accepted into Dalhousie’s Kinesiology program.

“I am thrilled to be coming to the East Coast to attend Dal and play for the Tigers,” says Phillips “It has been a goal of mine to play university hockey and I couldn’t be happier to have accomplished this.”

Goaltender Fabiana Petricca native joins the Tigers after a successful career with the Etobicoke Jr. Dolphins.

In her first full season with the Jr. Dolphins (2014-15), she made 19 regular season starts and registered a 2.7 goals against average (GAA) and a 0.900 save percentage (SV%). During the playoffs, she recorded a 0.94 GAA and a 0.974 SV%.  This season, she has made 22 starts and posted a 2.64 GAA and a 0.907 SV%.

“Fabiana is a goaltender with great fundamentals and solid positioning,” says Fraser. “She is very quick and controls her rebounds well. Fabiana’s ability to play the puck is one of her biggest assets and should really help our team exit the defensive zone quickly.”

Petricca has also been an honour roll student since grade eight and has won two junior female athlete of the year awards at St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic Secondary School. A native of Woodbridge, Ontario, she is currently enrolled in Dalhousie’s Kinesiology program.

“Having former teammates currently playing for the Tigers will make my transition from high school and minor hockey to university much smoother,” says Petricca. “I’m really excited to experience life on the East Coast while attending a prestigious university and continuing my hockey career.”

The Tigers will also be adding 5’9 forward Ashley Money to the 2016-17 squad. Money will join the Tigers after two years with the Burlington Jr. Barracudas.

The Langton, Ontario native made her PWHL debut in 2014 at defence with the Barracudas. She registered two goals and two assists and helped her team win the JWHL Challenge Cup in Washington D.C. that season. She was awarded with the coach’s award for her play that season as well. An assistant captain this year, she has made the jump to forward and has tallied nine goals and 10 assists so far this season.

“Ashley is a strong winger and that would best be described as a power forward,” says Fraser.  “She plays hard every shift and is a 200 foot player. She is fast up and down the wing and will be a good fit with our already fast forward group.”

Money is a two-time high school hockey MVP and a four-time honour roll student from Holy Trinity Simcoe High School. She will start classes in Dalhousie’s Therapeutic Recreation program this fall

“I am very excited to be attending Dalhousie and lacing up my skates with the Tigers,” says Money. “It has been a goal of mine to play varsity hockey and I can’t wait for the season to begin.”
