Tigers fall to Tommies 4-1

The St. Thomas Tommies bested the Dalhousie University Tigers 4-1 in AUS women's hockey action Sunday afternoon in front of 128 spectators at the Grant-Harvey Centre.

With the win, the Tommies improve to 8-5-1—the second best record in the AUS—while the Tigers drop to 6-8-0.

The Tommies dominated the possession in the first and were rewarded early when Paige Jackson beat Tigers' netminder Jessica Severeyns with a shot from the blue line for a 1-0 STU lead.

The Tigers were outshot 16-5 in the opening frame, but Severeyns stood tall and kept the Tigers within striking distance.

It was back and forth early in the second with both teams generating scoring chances, but the Tommies struck first as Henman finished top corner on the power play to give STU a two-goal lead. With 48 seconds to go, Henman netted her second power play goal of the game to put the Tommies up 3-0 after 40 minutes.

The Tigers rallied in the third and cut into the Tommies' lead off a goal from Corinne Desjardins midway through the frame, but Henman buried her third of the game at 18:25 to give STU the 4-1 win.

Tommies goaltender Abby Clarke made 18 saves in the win, while Severeyns turned away 40 shots in the loss.

Henman was named the AUS player of the game, while Caley Steinert and Jackson were named second and third stars, respectively.

The Tigers next play Wednesday January 13th at home vs the Saint Mary's Huskies. The Tommies are back in action January 16 when they travel to Antigonish to take on the StFX X-Women.
