Tigers take down Tommies 6-5

(Halifax, NS) In the last AUS women's hockey game of 2015 the Dalhousie Tigers took down the St. Thomas Tommies 6-5 at the Civic Centre late Saturday afternoon. The win gives the Tigers a crucial two points and now just sit one point back of third place in the AUS and the Tommies.

What a start it was for the Dalhousie Tigers who managed to jump out to a 2-0 lead just four minutes after the opening puck drop. Corinne Desjardins got the Tigers on the board first netting a loose puck off a Victoria MacIntosh blast.

Just 30 seconds later the Tigers were at it again as Lisa MacLean scored on an odd-man rush. Courtney Sheedy broke into the zone on a 3-on-2 and dropped the puck for MacLean who riffled a wrist shot from the top of the circle to beat Abby Clarke.

Kelty Apperson scored a late goal just before the end of the period to cut the Tommies deficit to 2-1.

St. Thomas outshot the Tigers 13-6 but trailed 2-1 heading into the dressing room after 20 minutes.

The Tigers came out firing once again in the second period this time, scoring two goals just 10 seconds apart in the first two minutes of the frame.

Sheedy recorded her second point of the night putting the Tigers up 3-1. Sarah Robichaud fired a shot that got blocked and Sheedy picked up the loose puck and made no mistake beating Clarke.

Just 10 seconds later Bianca Canade rushed into the Tommies zone off the neutral ice faceoff and scored her first AUS goal putting the Tigers up 4-1.

The wild opening minutes continued as Becky Conner hammered home a loose puck in front of the Tigers cage off a Caley Steinert shot just a minute later. The 4-2 score would hold up to the end of the 2nd period.

The high scoring affair continued into the third period as the Tommies managed to put up three third period goals but fell just short as the Tigers put away two of their own for a final score of 6-5.

Taylor Reichheld started the scoring off netting a power play goal in the opening minutes. Lisa MacLean got her second assist of the night on the Reichheld tally.

Lauren Henman cut the lead back to two half through the third period. Emily Oleksuk fed Henman in the slot from behind the net leaving Mati Barrett with no chance. Kenzie MacPhee scored just a minute later to restore the Dalhousie three goal lead.

The Tommies late surge came to late as they managed to score two goals in the final two minutes but still fell short 6-5.

Both teams are done for the year and will resume action in January.
