Tigers win second game of Savoy Tournament

The Saint Mary's University Huskies defeated the McMaster University Marauders 105-75 to begin Saturday's slate of games of the Dr. Carolyn Savoy Memorial Women's Basketball Tournament at Dalplex.

Aliyah Fraser (New Glasgow, NS) led SMU with 23 points off the bench and missed just four shots. Courtney Donaldson (Kelowna, BC) continues to be a consistent scorer for the Huskies, scoring 17 points today after a 16-point performance against the Laurentian University Voyageurs on Friday.

SMU led the game 49-34 at halftime, giving the 2022-23 AUS champions a 15-point lead.

Both teams were deadly from 3-point range, shooting over 40 per cent.

Jenna Button (Dundas, ON) scored 25 points in the loss and shot 3-7 from 3-point range. Amy Stinson (Hamilton, ON) added 11 points and 7 rebounds for the Marauders.

The University of New Brunswick Reds beat the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 71-50 in the day's second game.

It was all tied after one-quarter of play, 16-16. The Reds outscored the Pronghorns 18-7 in the second quarter to gain a 34-23 lead.

The Reds outrebounded the Pronghorns by seven rebounds. The Reds converted 13 second-chance points. 

Leading the way for the Reds again was 2021-22 AUS MVP Jayda Veinot (Port Williams, NS), who scored 25 points in each of the first two games.

Erin Ingalls (St. George, NB)  scored 7 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the victory.

Piper Dobbelsteyn (Edmonton, AB) led the Pronghorns in scoring in the loss with 10 points. Eighteen of the Pronghorns points came from the bench.

The Dalhousie University Tigers defeated the Voyageurs 69-66 in Saturday's final game at Dalplex.

The first half was back-and-forth, with the Tigers leading 35-32 after one half of play. Kaitlyn Ferrier (Calgary, AB) scored 14 points in the half to help give the lead.

The third quarter began with just two points scored through the first five minutes. 

The Tigers led by one point going into the fourth quarter. It came down to the final plays as the Voyageurs had multiple attempts to tie the game from the free throw line in the last 13.3 seconds, shooting 1-5.

Ferrier iced the game at the line with two made free throws as the Voyageurs missed a 3-pointer attempt to tie the game.

Sydney Guker-Wickie (Kitchener, ON) received player of the game, scoring 15 points. Melanie Cloutier (Sudbury, ON) received player of the game for the Voyageurs, scoring 16 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.
