Antigonish, NS – The Dalhousie Tigers (2-4) took a 77-55 game over the StFX X-Women (0-5) Saturday afternoon at the Oland Centre.

The Tigers used a balanced attack to take a 23-12 first quarter lead against the hometown X-Women.  Freshman Brianna Gottschall (Antigonish, NS) showed a nice touch in the first quarter scoring eight points. For Dalhousie, it was fifth year senior, Diedre Alexander (Woodstock, NB) who had seven in the opening frame.

The second quarter mirrored the first, with Dalhousie playing excellent defence and not allowing many good looks from outside of the paint. Robertha Charles (Montreal, QC) was a one-woman show to open the quarter scoring eight consecutive points as the Tigers opened up a big 29 points to 12 lead on the X-Women.

The bench was particularly effective for the visitors, with Hannah Chadwick (Toronto, ON) and Emily Holt (Halifax, NS) impressing with and without the ball. The Tigers took a commanding 42-22 point lead into the half.

The second half, though it might be argued the result was in hand, was a more competitive affair, with the X-Women making a nice run and running the Tigers close as scoring was even at 17 apiece in the third quarter.

Jamie McCarron (New Glasgow, NS) connected on a three-pointer to put the score at 53-37 and it looked like X might be able to make the score-line a bit more competitive.  Unfortunately for the hometown crowd, the Tigers soon returned to dominance.  Centre Lia Kentzler (Gottingen, GER) put in six points and was excellent in the paint.

The fourth quarter saw two freshman lead the way for both teams. Gottschall added seven points to her game high 19 points, and Riley Sood (Halifax, NS) added four points in what was a well-rounded effort.  The Tigers outscored the X-Women 35-34 in a tightly played second half.

With the first half advantage in hand, the Tigers took home the victory, their second of the season. At 0-5, the X-Women are still in search of their first win of the season.

Robertha Charles (Montreal, QC) led the Tigers with a double-double night scoring 14 points and hauling in 13 rebounds as she picked up Subway player of the game honours.

Alexander and Lia Kentzier (Gottingen, Germany) each netted 12 points for Dalhousie as Kentzler added six rebounds.

Brianna Gottschall (Antigonish, NS) was the high scorer and player of the game for StFX, scoring 19 points on the night to top all scorers in the game. Samantha Minicucci (Mississauga, ON) and Jamie McCarron (New Glasgow, NS) each scored 10.

The X-Women are back in action on Saturday, November 24th when they travel to Acadia. The Tigers will host cross-town rivals Saint Mary's on Friday night, November 23rd in a 6:00 pm game at Scotiabank Centre in the 2018 Varsity Showdown.
