Tigers take overtime win over X-Women

ANTIGONISH, NS - The visiting Dalhousie Tigers (5-8) scored a 60-55 overtime victory over the winless StFX X-Women (0-13) in AUS basketball action Tuesday night on Coach K Court at Oland Centre. 

The Tigers jumped to a 9-0 edge in the opening four minutes of the first quarter. 

The X-Women finished on a 7-2 run, making it 11-7 Tigers after 10 minutes. 

In the first minute of the second quarter, the X-Women took their first lead (12-11) on an offensive rebound and basket from Allison Reno (Halifax, NS), followed by a three-pointer from Maggie Segeren (Komoka, ON). 

Sophie Gaube (Hubley, NS) drained seven points, including a shot from downtown, to spark a Tiger burst. 

Midway through the second, the teams were deadlocked at 17. 

After six more consecutive points from Dal, Reno hooped back-to-back shots to wrap up the first half scoring. 

It was 23-23 at halftime. 

Early in the third quarter, Claire Hickman (St. John's, NL) and Kimberly Kingsbury (Nepean, ON) were the scoring leaders for the Tigers and X-Women, respectively, with four points apiece. 

Ignited by a jump shot from the free-throw line from Kendra Smith (North Preston, NS), the X-Women scored eight in a row to go up 37-29. 

After shots from beyond the arc from Gaube and Diedre Alexander (Woodstock, NB) the Tigers trimmed the deficit to 37-35. 

The Tigers led 40-39 heading into the fourth quarter. 

In a see-saw final 10 minutes, the sides were tied 49-49 when Kingsbury hit a baseline jumper to give the X-Women a two-point edge with 40 seconds remaining. 

After a Caroline Hrabinski (Toronto, ON), free throw, StFX led 52-49. 

Alexander swished a three-pointer with 11 seconds left in the game to send the match-up to overtime. 

In the five-minute extra session, Gaube broke a late tie with five consecutive points, including a three-pointer, to make it 60-55 with less than one minute remaining. 

Gaube, the Subway player of the game, scored a game-high 17 points, while adding five rebounds, two assists and one steal. 

Robertha Charles (Montreal, QC)  and Hickman also hit double figures, with 13 apiece, while adding 10 and eight rebounds, respectively. 

For the X-Women, Kingsbury was top scorer with 12 points, while chipping in six rebounds. 

Reno, the X-Women player of the game, finished with a career-best 11 points. She also contributed six rebounds and three steals. 

The teams will be back in action Friday, Jan. 26th in a re-match at Dalplex in Halifax. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
