(Halifax, N.S.) – A 20-point second quarter helped the Memorial Seahawks (10-6) top the Dalhousie Tigers (2-14) 80-48 on Saturday afternoon at the Dalplex.

Guard Sydney Stewart (Sarnia, ON) led all players with 16 points for the Seahawks, while guards Diedre Alexander (Woodstock, NB) and Michele Tchiakoua (Montreal, QC) both had 10 for the Tigers.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with both sides playing firm on the defensive end and causing five turnovers.

Offensively, Stewart and forward Brooklynn Wright (Cambridge, ON) led the way with five points each for Memorial, who led 17-15 entering the second quarter. Alexander led all scorers with seven points for Dalhousie.

The Seahawks opened up their offence in the second quarter, going on an 11-0 run early on, while taking a 14-point lead into the break. Five players got on the board for Memorial overall, who allowed just eight points on the defensive end.

Memorial shot 55.6 percent in the third quarter, opening their lead to over 20 points heading into the final 10 minutes of play. Centre Grace Diaz-Brita (Santa Cruz, Spain) led the way with six points, all of which came in the paint.

Despite the score, the Tigers kept up their defensive intensity in the fourth quarter, led by Tchiakoua, who finished with a double-double after recording 11 boards. The Seahawks lead was too insurmountable however, as they came away with the win.

The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday, taking on StFX on the road, while the Seahawks will host UPEI on Saturday.
