(Halifax, N.S.) – A 17-point second quarter helped the UNB Varsity Reds (9-3) top the Dalhousie Tigers (2-10) 59-38 on Saturday night at the Dalplex. The game was also in support of Bell Let's Talk Day, which occurs this Wednesday.

The game was deadlocked at 13 a piece after the opening quarter, before the visitors went on an 11-0 run in the opening five minutes of the second and didn't relinquish the lead from there.

Rebounding was a critical factor, with UNB winning the battle on the boards 49-33.

The Tigers came out strong in the opening 10 minutes, with seven different players registering at least a point. Wing Hannah Currie (Collingwod, ON) and guard Grace Wade (Moncton, NB) responded for UNB, with six and four points, respectively.

Guard Mikaela Dodig (Bolton, ON) was the catalyst offensively in the Varsity Reds second quarter, where she scored all seven of her points to give her squad a 30-19 lead heading into the break.

The Tigers were able to cut into UNB's lead at times in the second half, but were down double digits for the majority of the remainder of play.

Guard Shalyn Field (Halifax, NS) and forward Robertha Charles (Montreal, QC) led the charge for Dalhousie, but were unable to keep pace with Currie, who finished with a game-high 13 points as well as seven boards. Field was Dalhousie's leading scorer, with seven points.

Dalhosie's next action is on Friday, where they will battle Cape Breton on the road, while UNB will also be in action that night, hosting Saint Mary's.
