Strong third quarter helps Dal top StFX 73-52

(Halifax, N.S.) – A 29-point third quarter from the Dalhousie Tigers helped the hosts top the StFX X-Women 73-52 on Thursday night at the Dalplex.

Guard Shalyn Field (Halifax, NS) led the way for the Tigers, with 17 points and six rebounds. StFX's leading scorers were guards Chelsea Provo (East Preston, NS) and Holly Scott (Antigonish, NS), with 11 points each.

The Tigers marched to an early 8-0 lead midway through the first quarter, before StFX marched back with three straight buckets to narrow Dalhousie's lead.

The hosts would head into the second quarter up 18-10, after shooting 50 percent from the field. The X-Women shot just 20 percent, however they were successful from downtown, netting six of their 10 points from beyond the arc.

The second quarter went back-and-forth, as the Tigers entered the halftime up 28-21.  Field led the way for Dalhousie, with seven points and four steals, while Scott added five points of her own.

The two squads had a combined 28 turnovers in the first half, which kept either side from sustaining any form of extended momentum.

Dalhousie came alive in the third quarter however. They doubled their first half point total and effectively put the game out of reach, up 57-37.

Fellow rookies Robertha Charles (Montreal, QC) and Michele Tchiakoua (Yaounde, Cameroon) led the charge.

Charles was lethal in the paint, and finished the contest with 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field, while Tchiakoua had a team-leading five assists to go with nine points.

Provo had a strong second half for the X-Women, however it wasn't enough, as Dalhousie emerged with the 21-point win.

With the victory, the Tigers improved to 2-3, while StFX fell to 0-5. The X-Women's next game is on Wednesday at Cape Breton, while Dalhousie will take on Acadia on the road next Thursday.
