Citadins top Tigers 64-39

(HALIFAX, N.S.) – The UQaM Citadins defeated the Dalhousie Tigers on Friday night at the 32nd annual Lawtons Centennial Women's Basketball Tournament. This was the second game of the night held at Dalplex in Halifax.

The Citadins came out strong holding off the Tigers for the majority of the first quarter with some remarkable defense. It wasn't until 5:38 in the quarter when Diedre Alexander got the Tigers on the board with a two-point shot inside the box.

Citadins were quick to respond when center Jessica Lubin danced around a Tigers defender with an impressive spin move to put the squad up 8-2.

With just under a few minutes to go in the quarter, Tigers player Michele Tchiakoua drove hard to the rim while getting fouled on the way. She buried both the driving shot and the foul shot.

A 3-pointer sunk by Roxanne Douaire concluded the first quarter making the score 14-8 for the Citadins.

The Citadins came out strong in the second quarter with a poised jump shot by Jessica Lubin and a quick layup a few plays later by Claudia Riel.

The Tigers took a time out with six minutes to go and it seemed to pay off as Diedre Alexander came out after to shoot a perfect jump shot which raised the Tigers score to 12.

Two foul shots were completed by veteran Tigers guard Shalyn Field to round out the second quarter with the Tigers trailing 29-12.

Michele Tchiakoua of the Tigers opened the scoring in the third quarter with a great outside drive on a Citadins defender.

The Citadins players continued to show excellent defense throughout this quarter, stopping the Tigers offense on multiple attempts. This would turn out to be rather troublesome for the Tigers as the Citadins ended the quarter with a 19 point lead over the Tigers.

The Tigers would not quit, attempting several more shots as a team, Diedre Alexander opened the fourth quarter with an excellent off balance jump shot.

Right back with a hail mary pass across the court, Citadins forward Sarah Cabana walked in alone for an easy layup.

It wasn't until a few minutes left in a game that second year Tigers guard Sophie Gaube showed off her 3-point skills and buried one - 60-37 for the Citadins.

UQaM's Manon Coquelin sealed the deal with a foul line shot making the final score 64-39 for the Citadins.

The top scorer for the Citadins was Bianca Marios who had 11 points while Michele Tchiakoua had nine for the Tigers.

The Citadins will be back in action against the Laurier Golden Hawks tomorrow at 5pm AST and the Dalhousie Tigers will test their skills against the Saint Mary's Huskies at 7pm AST.
