Women's basketball pick up teammates from Quebec

(Halifax, N.S.) - Women’s basketball head coach Anna Stammberger is pleased to announce the commitment of Robertha Charles and Michele Tchiakoua to the Tigers 2016-17 roster. Both players will join the Tigers after three seasons with Dawson College in the CEGEP league in Quebec.

Together they helped lead Dawson College to provincial championship bronze medal finishes in 2014 and 2016, and a fourth place finish in 2015.

Charles, a 5’10 forward, averaged 7.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game and had 42 steals this past season. During the 2014-15 season, she averaged 7.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.

“I am really excited to come to Dalhousie because it is one of the best universities in Canada,” says Charles. “I really like the academic support they offer at Dal, which will help me be successful. I see great potential and a great future ahead for the team. I am really looking forward to play under the leadership of Coach Stammberger.”

A native of Montreal, Quebec, Charles is currently enrolled in Dalhousie’s sociology program.

Tchiakoua, a 5’7 guard, averaged 6.8 points per game this year and was very active defensively, recording 6.2 rebounds per game and 25 steals over the course of the season. She registered 9.6 points per game in 2014-15 and had one of the league’s best shooting percentages with .380.

“I think Dalhousie will be a great fit for me,” says Tchiakoua. “It is a really good school and the academic support program will help me succeed in the classroom. I’m very excited to join this Tigers this season and am grateful to Coach Anna for the opportunity.”

An honour roll student at Dawson College, Tchiakoua is also from Montreal, Quebec and will be starting a degree in therapeutic recreation this September.

“We are extremely happy about the recent commitment of both Robertha and Michele,” says Stammberger. “We believe they will have an immediate impact on the team next season. Their experience in the very competitive CEGEP league will no doubt help us on both ends of the court. Add to this the fact that they've already been teammates for three years makes for a very exciting, and hopefully easier, transition to Halifax, Dalhousie University, and the CIS!”
