Huskies top Tigers in Shoot for the Cure game
(Halifax, NS) On Friday night the Dalhousie Tigers hosted cross town rivals, the Saint Mary’s Huskies in their annual Shoot for the Cure game which raises awareness and funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The Huskies prevailed in the fourth quarter beating the Tigers 62-51.

(Halifax, NS) On Friday night the Dalhousie Tigers hosted cross town rivals, the Saint Mary's Huskies in their annual Shoot for the Cure game which raises awareness and funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The Huskies prevailed in the fourth quarter beating the Tigers 62-51.
Dalhousie men's basketball players, Sven Stammberger and Matt McVeigh participated in a half time competition in efforts to raise money for Shoot for the Cure. Both players had a 10 free throws with $10 being donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation for each made basket. The pair went 16/20 resulting in $160 being donated to the cause.
Dalhousie had a good start to the game opening up a 4-0 lead early on. The Huskies came firing back taking a 12-8 lead. Emma Valikoski was able to go the length of the court and beat the first quarter buzzer with a lay up.
Saint Mary's had a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Tigers were able to tie things up at 17-17 halfway through the second quarter but a mini run by the Huskies restored their lead to 25-19.
After a relatively quite first quarter by Tessa Stammberger standards, Tessa made a nice post move to cut the Huskies lead to 30-25.
Dalhousie was able to keep up with the high flying Saint Mary's Huskies only finding themselves down 32-27 at the half.
A strong third quarter saw the Tigers cut the lead to just two points. Diedre Alexander hit a jump shot at the buzzer to bring the Tigers within one basket, trailing 45-43.
The momentum generated in the third quarter did not carry over to the fourth. Dalhousie's offense dried up as they went without a field goal for the opening six minutes of the quarter. To make matters worse Rachelle Coward was on fire for the Huskies dropping 9 of her game her 22 points in the frame.
Saint Mary's outscored the Tigers 17-8 in the fourth quarter and took the game by a final score of 62-51.
Stammberger was quite but still managed to lead the Tigers offense with 13 points.
Dalhousie (4-8) will travel to UPEI (3-8) Saturday, January 23 for a four-point game. Saint Mary's (10-1) is off till next Saturday when they host StFX (2-9).
