Tigers raise funds for breast cancer research

The Tigers held their annual Shoot for the Cure game Friday, November 7, 2014. Not only were the Tigers victors over the UPEI Panthers that night, they also championed the fight against breast cancer.

In addition to funds raised through their participation in the CIBC Run for the Cure in October, the Tigers raised additional funds through a bake sale (run by the residents of Dalhousie residence Shirreff Hall), sponsored free throw shots and on-line donations received by second-year player Carissa Poulin.

After their 54-47 win, the Tigers welcomed breast cancer survivor and Dalhousie professor, Dr. Katherine Harman to the court to share her story over coming breast cancer. Afterwards, Courtney Thompson and Tessa Stammberger headed to the foul line to take 10 shots each. Tigers supporters Diane Bell and Mary Crane sponsored the foul shots, offering a $10 donation for each shot made up to a total of $200 ($100 each). Thompson made nine of her 10 shots, while Stammberger added another eight.

The event was capped off by the cutting of Carissa Poulin's hair. For the last eight weeks, Poulin had been accepting donations to reach her goal of $2,000 to cut 14 inches of her hair to donate to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths. The program uses the donated hair to make wigs for women who are battling cancer.

While sitting at centre court, Poulin watched her hair drop to the floor as coach Anna Stammberger, teammate Christina Brown and Black and Gold member Bob Lewington, who is currently battling brain cancer, all cut a section of her hair.

All in all, the Tigers raised over $3,500 this year. Way to go Tigers!
