Tigers take down Varsity Reds 63-48

The Tigers take four points from the UNB Varsity Reds tonight at the Dalplex, defeating the Varsity Reds 63-48. With the victory the Tigers improve to 12-6 and are in a three-way tie for first in the AUS, while the Varsity Reds fall to 8- 10.

AUS leading scorer Courtney Thompson once again led the game in scoring with 26 points, while Shalyn Fields notched 12 points of her own and brought down seven rebounds.

Rachel Cleary scored 10 points and Laura Kaye 9 for the Varsity Reds, with Kiley DeLong adding a game high of 12 rebounds.  The Varsity Reds were also strong at the free throw line shooting a 90% free throw percentage.

The Tigers took an early 10-2 lead over the Varsity Reds at the 5:28 mark. They took the first quarter 19-14 with Thompson coming in hot with nine points. In the second the Varsity Reds out scored the Tigers 12-10 to beat down the Tigers lead to 29-26 as they entered the second half. 

The third quarter continued to go back and forth between the Tigers and Varsity Reds. Nearing the end of the quarter the Tigers were able to take a six-point run to continue into the final quarter with a nine-point lead.

In the fourth and final quarter with 4:28 left on the clock, the Varsity Reds had managed to beat down the Tigers lead to 52-48; however, it wasn't enough as the Tigers then continued on to score eleven more points and took the victory 63-48.

The Subway players of the game were Nicole LaFleur for the Varsity Reds and Shalyn Fields for the Tigers.

The Tigers will be back on the court next Saturday when they host the Cape Breton Capers in back-to-back games, while the Varsity Reds will take on the Memorial Sea-Hawks in Fredericton on Saturday. Both games tip off at 6:00pm.
