Tigers Topple Huskies 70-63

(HALIFAX,N.S.)--Courtney Thompson's double-double stole the show in Dalhousie's 70-63 AUS women's basketball win Saturday afternoon over the CIS No. 10 SMU Huskies.

The Saint John, NB native chipped in 28 points and pulled in 10 rebounds for the Tigers, whose win was worth four points in the standings. Dalhousie improves to 9-4 (26 points) and grabs a share of first place with Saint Mary's, 11-2 (26 points).
The Tigers used a 9-0 first quarter run to build a 24-7 lead after 10 minutes.
A 7-0 Huskies run in the second frame trimmed Dal's lead to 26-14 but Dal ended the half on a 6-2 run of their own for a 38-25 locker room lead.
SMU won the third quarter scoring 17-15 and nibbled away at Dal's lead 53-42.
The Huskies used a 10-0 opening quarter run to trail 53-52 at the 7:30 mark. A quick Dal time-out saw the Tigers regain their 11 point lead with their own 10-0 run, 63-52.
A Huskies basket made it 65-61 Dal as the Tigers made timely shots down the stretch for the 70-63 win.
Dal's Tessa Stammberger (Halifax, NS) also notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Shad Bay, Nova Scotia's Kristy Moore added 10 points for the Tigers.
Laura Langille (Bedford, NS) paced the Huskies with 18 points and five rebounds while teammates Shanieka Wood (Ajax, ON) and Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (Montreal, QC) rounded out SMU's double digit scorers with 14 and 10 points respectively.
Also scoring for the Huskies on the afternoon were Emma Valikoski (Espoo, Findland) with eight points, Alexandra Smye (Halifax, NS) six points, Angelina Carvery (Halifax,NS) five points. Katrina Murrell (Markham, ON) and Veronica Vaickus (Baie-Comeau, QC) also added single points for SMU.
 
Saint Mary's returns to action on the road Wednesday versus StFX for a 6pm game, while the Tigers host Acadia on Tuesday.
