Tigers win AUS track and field championships

It was a fantastic championship for both the men's and women's track and field teams. The women won their 28th consecutive championship title while the men captured their 36th championship in the program's history. At the end of the meet, Sarah Myatt was named the women's AUS championship MVP. Mike Van Der Poel and Colleen Wilson were selected as the male and female track athletes of the year while Jordan Bruce won the men's field athlete of the year award. Newcomer Maya Reynolds earned women's rookie of the year honours.

Event Recap by Moncton Athletics

MONCTON – Dalhousie University Tigers women and men won top honors at the Subway Atlantic University Sport Track and Field Championships, held Friday and Saturday at the Stade Vance-Toner of the CEPS Louis-J.-Robichaud, on the Moncton campus.

The Tigers men took a third championship in a row while the women took an unprecedented 28th title in a row. The Tigers collected 144 points in the men and 137, for the women. The St. Francis Xavier University X-Women were second in the women division with 125 points followed by University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds, with 54 points. The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues were fourth (26), the Memorial University Sea-Hawks, fifth (21), the Saint Mary's University Huskies, sixth (12), the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers, seventh (9), the Mount Allison University Mounties, eight (7), the Acadia University Axewomen, ninth (4) and the St. Thomas University Tommies, tenth (3). 

In the men division, the UNB Varsity Reds were second (101 points), the St. Francis Xavier X-Men, third (86), the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus, fourth (42), the Memorial University Sea-Hawks, fifth (24) and the Saint Mary's University Huskies, sixth (13).

Alain Doucet, of the Aigles Bleus and Sarah Myatt, of the Tigers, were chosen as AUS competition most valuable athletes. Mike Van der Poel and Colleen Wilson, both Tigers, were the track athletes of the year while Jordan Bruce, of the Tigers and Mounties Jennifer Bell, the field athletes of the year.

The rookies of the year are Andrew Wood, of the Sea-Hawks and Maya Reynolds, of the Tigers. The Community Service Awards went to Varsity Reds athletes Troy Wilson and Tess McDonald.

Lindsay Mackenzie of the St. Francis Xavier won both women and men volunteer coach of the year awards. Coaches of the year honors went to Varsity Reds Jason Reindl, men and Bernie Chisholm, of the X-Women for the women.

There were a record 240 registered athletes from 10 of the 11 AUS member universities at the competition. Several will attend the U SPORTS Championships, March 9-11, in Edmonton, Alberta.
