Tigers defend AUS swimming titles
The Tigers men's and women's swim teams defended their AUS titles this weekend.
The Tigers women's swim team claimed their 35th straight AUS title on Sunday. The men's team also successfully defended their AUS title.
The evening finals opened with Tigers Mia Stein-Blumberg and Alexia Morgans going 1-2 in the women's 200m butterfly. Acadia's Anna Whittaker touched in third.
Acadia's Nate Thompson won the men's 200m butterfly event. Dal's Isaac Bahler touched the wall in second place followed by UNB Craig Bush.
For the second straight day, Acadia's Ella Collins and Chloe Popp went 1-2 in a race, this time in the 50m breaststroke. Tiger Kate Tuck claimed the bronze.
UNB's Blake Kingston won the men's 50m breaststroke. Tigers Keilen Bellis and Quinn Nolan finished in second and third.
Emma Carrier Clarke won her fourth individual gold medal of the weekend, this time in the 100m freestyle. Acadia's Cassidy Karrel touched in second place followed by Dal's Elaine Gentleman in third.
Memorial's Chris Weeks lowered his own AUS record in the 100m freestyle to 47.81seconds. Logan Sparkes claimed silver and Acadia's David Harvie claimed the bronze.
In the women's 200m backstroke, Acadia's Sophie Rooney and Grace Earle finished in first and third with Dalhousie's Emilie Schofield in second.
Cole Mitchell won his second gold medal of the weekend in the men's 200m backstroke. Memorial's Liam MacArthur touched second followed by Tiger Eli Pickup, winning his first AUS medal, in third.
Dalhousie's Ella Dobson won the 800m freestyle race. Memorial's Natalie Smart in second. Dalhousie's Alexia Morgans won her second medal of the day, touching in third.
Tigers Yannick Morgans and Morgan Sparkes went 1-2 in the men's 1500m race. David Harvie touched in third.
In the final relay races of the weekend Acadia claimed gold in the women's 400m medley. Dalhousie's team of Schofield, Tuck, Stein-Blumberg and Carrier Clarke claimed silver. UNB was in third.
The Tigers team of Quinn Nolan, Connor Maloney, Will Myrer and Logan Sparkes won the men's relay. UNB touched second followed by Memorial in third.
At the end of the races, the major awards were handed out. Mia Stein-Blumberg was named the female rookie of the meet and the rookie of the year. Emma Carrier Clarke went undefeated in races this weekend and was named the female swimmer of the meet.
Timothy McCowan was named the male student-athlete community service award winner.
Tigers head coach Lance Cansdale was named the men's team coach of the year.
