Tigers lead after day one of Amby Legere

(FREDERICTON, NB) The Dalhousie Tigers lead the combined team standings after the first day of competition at the Amby Legere Invitational at UNB's Sir Max Aitken Pool. 

The event is the second meet of the 2023-2024 Atlantic University Sport swimming season. 

The Tigers flexed their muscle immediately with Reagan Crowell and Emma Carrier Clark finishing first and second in the women's 50-metre freestyle. 

Dal's Noah Mascoll-Gomes won the men's 50 free while Tiger Katie Berwick took first in the women's 200-metre backstroke. 

Acadia's Nate Thompson broke Dal's streak, swimming to victory in the men's 200-metre backstroke. 

UNB's Maxime Kenny was third, the host school's first top-three finisher of the day. 

Acadia's Sophie Rooney won the women's 100-metre butterfly, beating Dal's Amari DeLima-Baril and UNB's Emma Sinclair. 

Tigers swept the men's 100 fly with Liam Ferguson leading the way. 

Ella Collins of Acadia won the women's 50-metre breaststroke, beating Dal's Ava Mackenzie and Mount Allison's Jordan Thomas. Her teammate Gordon Shortt won the men's 50 breast. 

Tigers swimmers swept the top three spots in the women's 200-metre freestyle led by Kate Tuck. Dal's Noah Thomas won the men's 200-metre free. 

In the women's 400-metre individual medley, Dal's Meredith Coolen beat UNB's Emma Sinclair. 

Liam Ferguson won the men's 400-metre IM for the Tigers. 

Crowell scored her second win of the day, edging Acadia's Sophie Rooney in the women's 100-metre freestyle. 

Mascoll-Gomes followed that with a second win of his own, taking the men's 100-metre free, beating Tigers teammate Logan Sparkes and Acadia's Oliver Dawood. 

Collins scored her second win of the day, taking the women's 100-metre breaststroke for Acadia. Dal's Ava Mackenzie edged the Mounties' Jordan Thomas for second. 

Tigers swimmers swam first, second, third and fourth in the men's 100-metre breaststroke, with Keilen Bellis beating teammate Timothy McCowan by just 4/10ths of a second. 

Crowell then added victory number three, taking the women's 800-metre free. Her Dal teammate Yannick Morgans won the men's 800-free. 

And Tigers teams took first and third in both the women's and men's 4-by-50-metre freestyle relays. Acadia teams finished second in both events. 

In the women's team standings, Dal leads Acadia while UNB and Mount A are third and fourth. 

In the men's standings, Dal sits first, followed by Acadia, the REDS, and the Mounties. 

Dal's lead atop the combined team standings is 400 points on Acadia. UNB and the Mounties are fighting for third. 

The Amby Legere Invitational concludes Sunday. The first starting gun will be fired at 10:00am.
