(Halifax, N.S.) – On the third and final day of the Kemp-Fry Invitational Swim Meet, the Dalhousie women and the McGill men were atop the team standings.
Dalhousie won four of the eight individual events today and was also first in the 400m medley relay. Phoebe Lenderyou won both the 50m butterfly and the 100m backstroke in U Sports-qualifying times. She got her third win of the evening in the 400m medley relay with teammates Alexis Bragman, Lise Cinq-Mars and Claire Yurkovich (also a U-Sports-qualifying time). Cinq-Mars also won the 200m butterfly and earned a spot at the U Sports championships in that event and the 50m butterfly. Yurkovich also made the cut in the 400m freestyle final, winning the event by nearly four seconds.
McGill captured another three A finals today for second place in the team standings. Jessica Warrack (200m IM), Simone Cspelo (100m freestyle) and Farah Hafazalla (200m breaststroke) all won events today, meeting U Sports championship-qualifying standards. Esmee Smit-Anseeuw also met the standard in the 50m butterfly.
Memorial's Veronica Read won the 50m backstroke, earning a berth at U Sports championships in February. Charli LeBlanc earned a spot in the 100m backstroke after a second-place finish.
McGill captured the men's title after winning three finals today. Samuel Wang (50m butterfly) Jean-Daniel Vallières (200m IM) and Colin Somers (200m breaststroke) were the event winners for the Redmen. They posted U Sports-qualifying times in all three races, as did Kade Wist and David Whiteside. The 400m medley relay team of Wang, Somers, Wist and Gabriel Fortin met the U Sports standard with a second-place finish.
The Tigers placed second in the team standings after five first-place finishes, including the 400m medley relay. The team of Morrgan Payne, Tony Liew, Liam Branton and Gavin Dyke set a new AUS record with a U Sports-qualifying time of 3:43.16, breaking the previous record of 3:43.21 set by the Tigers team of David Sharpe, Kit Moran, Simon Boilard and Joseph Ur in 2012. Dyke also won the 100m and 400m freestyle events, meeting U Sports standards in both races.
Alec Karlsen was first in the 200m butterfly, earning his spot at the U Sports championships. Keenan Teghtsoonian also posted a U Sports-qualifying time in the 200m IM. Payne was the other event winner for the Tigers, placing first in the 100m backstroke.
UNB's Justin LeBlanc won the 50m breaststroke and earned a spot at the U Sports championship with his time of 26.67. Acadia's Brett Liem also qualified in the same event.
Sam Leawood (Memorial) and Geraint Berger (Mount Allison) posted U Sports-qualifying times in the 100m freestyle event after finishing second and third, respectively.
The next AUS Invitational meet is scheduled for January 21 and 22 at Dalhousie University in advance of the AUS championships at UPEI in February.
