Tigers off to early lead at Kemp-Fry Invitational

(Halifax, N.S.) – In the first day of Dalhousie's Kemp-Fry Invitational Swim Meet, 15 swimmers met U Sports championship qualifying times and the Tigers men's 800m freestyle relay team of Gavin Dyke, Peter Inches, Keenan Teghtsoonian and Tyler Immel-Herron set a new AUS record. Dyke also set the 200m freestyle record during the opening leg of the relay.

The host Tigers had five swimmers make their U Sports mark in six events on day one, including Claire Yurkovich who touched first in a time of 8:55.41 to start the meet in the 800m freestyle final. Mackenzie Holden followed suit in the 1500m freestyle final, coming in first in a time of 15:56.72.

Phoebe Lenderyou and Lise Cinq-Mars hit U Sports-qualifying times in the preliminaries of the 50m butterfly. Lenderyou posted another qualifying time in the 50m backstroke, while Morrgan Payne was the sole qualifier in the men's 50m backstroke preliminary.

McGill's Jessica Warrack posted a U Sports-qualifying time of 8:56.27, good for second place in the 800m freestyle final. McGill had five other swimmers post U Sports-qualifying times including Esmee Smit-Anseeuw (women's), Samuel Wong and William Dixon (men's) in the 50m butterfly preliminaries. Carly Edy and Simone Cseplo qualified in the women's 50m backstroke preliminaries.

Charli LeBlanc was second in the women's 50m backstroke preliminaries, earning a U Sports-qualifying time for Memorial, as did Veronica Reid in the women's 50m breaststroke heat.

Acadia and UNB each had one swimmer earn a U Sports berth. Adam Lauren (UNB) earned hers in the 50m backstroke while Acadia's Alison MacEachern met the time standard in the 50m butterfly preliminaries.

At the end of day one, Dalhousie captured all four finals including both 800m freestyle relays and leads both the men's and women's team totals.

Day two of the Kemp-Fry Invitational starts tomorrow morning at 10:00amAST for preliminaries followed by finals at 5:00pmAST.
