First Year Feature - Men's Volleyball

First Year Feature - Men's Volleyball

The transition from high school to college athletics is significant. We’re highlighting athletes from all varsity teams this season who are on the path to becoming great athletes at Dalhousie University.

This week we would like to introduce Sam Gallagher, a first-year setter on the men's volleyball team! Hailing from Fredericton, New Brunswick, Sam is studying general sciences here at Dal!

How long have you been playing volleyball?

I have been playing for 10 years.

Did you play any other sports growing up?

I played basketball up until grade 12.

Who is somebody in sport you admired growing up and why?

I admired Stephen Curry growing up, not only because he is one of the greatest point guards of all time, but because of his work ethic and leadership he brings to the court.

What is the most memorable moment in your career so far?

It would have to be the first time getting to play in our league matches at the beginning of the season.

What made you choose Dalhousie University?

I chose Dal because of the great reputation in academics, along with Coach Ota and our excellent group of assistant coaches as well.

Did any of your family members attend Dalhousie University?

No, they did not.

What are some differences you have noticed being a part of a DAL team compared to your previous teams?

At Dal our team is like a family, our team does everything together and I spend a big portion of my day with the fellas.

How would you describe your time with the team so far?

My time with the team so far has been lots of fun, but at the same time a grind. We are pushing each-other to be better every day.

What are some of your interests outside of sports?

Outside of sports, I listen to a lot of music and spend times with family and friends.

Any pre-game superstitions/routines?

Listen to Oowatanite by April wine at least once!

What is the biggest risk you have taken so far in your athletic career?

To stay in Fredericton, New Brunswick and not receive a ton of exposure in sports because of how small it is. Lucky enough for me I still got the opportunity to be a Tiger.

What was the coolest experience you have had so far this year?

Getting to go to Winnipeg during Christmas break, we got to meet and stay with the some of their players. As well as get to play high level volleyball against teams we would not normally get to play because they are from the west coast.

Any hidden talents?

I can play the guitar!
